It was only a Category ONE, for Pete's sake. And while I know that is still a powerful storm, I just can't see any reason why anyone at all would have had to die. Were they people near the coast who couldn't properly evacuate, or what? :(
The winds were stronger than anticipated and the flooding was so bad that it weakened the trees, making for a very dangerous situation. Also very slow moving. This has been on top of us now for six hours with 100 mph wind gusts. Also several hurricanes and water spouts.
A category one can be deadly given these situations. It toppled a highway overpass in Miami and in Ft. Lauderdale it toppled an eighteen wheeler on an overpass, so you can imagine how strong the winds really are.
