1. Extraordinarly large amount of pain
Prepare to take Percocet or Oxytoctin for pain control.

(My wife took Viocidin for the last root canal)

8. Not really. I've had a couple.
I was so numbed up he might as well have been working on a rock in the next room.
Had some pain medication, but only took one or two.
It just wasn't that bad.
Stiff upper, and all that.

22. I think stiff upper lip
comes with the territory. I have a stiff upper lip right now from today's visit with my friend the dentist.

10. Oh this sounds like a lot of fun
800 mg Motrin tears up my innards and Vicodin makes me sick. Maybe someone could jsut hit me on the head and wake me up a couple of weeks later.

6. Mine was not painful at all, but
required a long time sitting in the chair, with my mouth in various states of contortion. Kind of like a getting some kind of super filling.

11. That's how mine was.
Pain, not bad. Time in the chair and, as gwbsamoron points out, contorted mouth, fairly extended. I recovered pretty fast, and although I hate having dental work done, I have to say it wasn't too bad.

9. I had one last spring,
And other than my mouth being sore from being open so long, I really didn't have much pain. Didn't take any pain meds afterwards, didn't need to.

13. This sounds a whole lot better
Gawd I know about the mouth thing... I have a very small mouth, inspite of the fact that I have my foot in it frequently, so dentists visits aren't at the top of my fun list anyway.

12. Not always a lot of pain
The amount of pain depends in part on the condition of your tooth. I had a couple of root canals done on dead teeth. One had gotten badly infected. There was less pain after the first root canal session than before with that one. Your dentist office can probably give you a better idea of what to expect.

16. Dentist today said the tooth was dead
and that he didn't even have to give me anesthetic today, so this may not be too bad. I'm a real wimp when it come to pain in my head, though. Probably has something to do with having had my nose broken twice.

14. Weird sounds
Sounds like they are taking a spring to the inside of your tooth and bouncing it up and down.

Not much pain, though.

17. I just cut the pain medication (Tylenol 5) in half
I can't take a lot of medicine, so I just cut it into small pieces (I had gum surgery and they gave me Percodin for that.) I got the Tylenol w/codeine for a root control. The root control wasn't so bad, actually. Far better than the preceding toothache.

18. They're not as bad as you think
don't let everyone scare you.

If the doc numbs you right you'll be fine. It will be sore later but the initial drilling isn't too bad.

I expected wild pain and was pleasantly surprised when I got it done.

23. your jaw will probably be sore from having your mouth open
so i would take some advil or whatever you usually take before you go in, i had a root canal a couple of years ago and the most painful part was the shots of novocain. Don't feel too bad, my husband is coming home from China tomorrow and on Monday morning when he'll still be really tired i have to take him in to have all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed.

24. Impacted wisdom teeth were not a problem
I had all four removed at the same time. (Because I knew I would never come back if I didn't get them all done at once.) Oral surgeon knocked me out totally, then gave some sort of codein stuff for home. I would wake up just long enough to feel a little twinge and pop another codein. A week and a half later I woke up long enough to realize what I was doing and switched to Tylenol or something. Did I mention I don't get along well with drugs? :)
I have taken so few drugs that when I have to take them, they hit me like a sledge hammer.

25. No problem. I have had two root canals.
Dentist numbs you up, so you will not feel anything. I was given pain pills, but never had to take them.
