94. I knew you'd be here ahead of me
Rats. I have no chance of posting first in these daytime threads.

Likewise, I love my '95 Infiniti G20, a Crimson Pearl model that I still label Burgundy. No one has keyed it or left chicken bones on the top for a while.

And somehow my replacement antenna shaft now fully declines. I bought it off ebay in May after the old antenna mast broke and got stuck in the up position. I had no clue what I was doing and had to take apart the entire assembly through an opening in the trunk. Took the bulk of two days and for the next 5 months the antenna would only descend to a level many inches above the car. Somehow a few weeks ago it finally decided to hide completely, every time. Hurray for me!

142. Uh oh, sounds like the same trouble I had
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 08:27 PM by Awsi Dooger
The white antenna stem probably broke. If you can still hear the motor trying to work that's the most likely culprit. Damn, I forget the exact terminology but this is the site I used. Search for antenna and plenty of threads will come up. It's a common problem:
http://www.g20.net/

It was a $20 replacement mast on ebay. Then you unscrew the black molding atop the car. If you're lucky, merely feeding the new antenna will do the trick. It requires two people so one can turn the radio on and off while the other holds the antenna. If you're unlucky like me, it required opening the trunk and taking out the motor assembly to the right, inside where the jack is located. I had to unscrew everything and place grease inside the assembly, then wrap the new white stem. Since it's working now I can look back and be satisified, but at the time I was wishing I either took it to a shop or let the antenna stay in the up position. That's where mine was stuck.

148. That link saved my butt two or three times
I described the problem and the forum regulars pointed me toward the correct diagnosis and remedy, always much less painful and expensive than I imagined. The last time was a couple months ago. A little motor in the front right of the hood kept staying on even while I turned off the ignition. It drained the battery once. Turned out it was ABS related, the sensor relay switches. I boiught two of them for $15 apiece after advice from that forum and popped them in myself. Problem solved pronto.

It's a great little car. I have a Santa Fe and am very happy. I want the new Sonata made in Alabama. It's becoming harder and harder to just say camry and accord. You MUST put the sonata in the same league if you've test driven it a bit and compared. I did.

Hate that winter seems to have really set in so early this year. It's awfully cold already here in the Motor City and it's snowed twice. The snow hasn't been too bad -- just 2-3" each time -- but enough to make it dreary.

If you're ever in town visiting relatives, PM me ahead of time and maybe you can join us for dinner one night or something.

Sadly Saturn's used them on less and less of thier cars' surface over time, which sucks. Other than paint scuffs my 8 year old Saturn looks new since it's old enough that the whole body's polymer.

83. Thanks!
The 460 is the same as the 429 but with more stroke. The heads are early passenger car heads. Many people would step over these in favor of the Cobra Jet heads with the larger ports and valves, but in the hands of a real artist the passenger car heads (C8VE, C9VE and D0VE) can flow huge amounts of air and do so with higher velocity. I have numbers if you want, but they will rival the Edelbrock aluminum heads, and yet most people don't know how good these heads are. Stealth heads. The compression is streetable on premium.

In 1958, the "Y block" 292 was optional, as was the new 332 and 352 FE engines. The 312, a larger version of the 292 last available in 1957, was a common swap. In the picture, my car still had the 352 with fenderwell headers and 3X2 carbs.

85. The flow numbers wouldn't mean much to me
Not without something to compare to, anyway. I haven't gotten into the hard-core physics of engine-building.

But, yeah, it kinda breaks me up how so many guys go for the big-ass heads and fat cams — and it's gotta be a cool-sounding name brand — when the factory option sheets will often have setups that work more efficiently for a lot less $, and they'll run on 89 octane. GM has complete aftermarket small-blocks that give 330 BHP from 8.5:1 compression. Tempting.

This is part of what I learned by screwing up. :banghead:

88. Crate engines can be a great value.
The GM 350s & 383s and the Ford 302/342, 351Ws & 392Ws are a great way to go. Chrysler has cool crate engines for the Mopar folks, and they all have big block versions. I roll my own because I am a cheap bastard and because I have a compulsion to work on stuff. Rodents gotta gnaw and I have to work on stuff.

The old Spitfire got 36 miles per gallon, and they are pretty cool. I figure that although the '58 will be the last real hot rod I have, I can still have some car fun. Maybe a VW turbo diesel in a Jeep.

101. I've got the Targetmaster 350
in my El Camino — the bone-stock version; I think it's rated at 225 BHP with the 4-barrel. With the Edelbrock intake and headers it might be pushing 250, but it doesn't have the lungs or gears to work the power curve very well. But that's okay, because I'm not the speed freak I once was.

Before, it had a .030-over 327 from Summit Racing that was pretty sweet, but a couple of cam lobes went flat and I let a guy at a speed shop talk me into a roller cam with too much duration. He advanced the ignition timing like 15 degrees just to get it to idle, and it ran so rich that the rings went away after 40,000. That was the mistake that made me start learning more.

The main thing I wanna do now is yank the Powerglide and stuff a TH-350 or 700-4R behind it. 'Glides are the best-built trannys ever, but this one's the original; it's gone 330,000 miles. And besides, I'm sick of having only two gears.

But the big one is real. We bought it at the Pomona car swap meet. I've been all over it. The differential is the only part I have not worked over or rebuilt. It's a 302 with 351W heads, Edelbrock intake and cam and 351W exhaust manifolds. I'd love to do something with the engine, like a roller cam and those modern GT40P heads for better mileage. I dunno. It does not get driven much these days.

79. Welll...
The Veg truck is my daily driver. The 1990 Colony Park is Ms. OR's daily driver, unless Veg Truck is broke. If I have the CP, then Ms. OR drives the Cougar. It was her daily driver for many years, but the CP gets better mileage. The '58 is strictly a toy. I need to seal a leak in the gas tank, swap the carb (for bigger, aaaarrrrg!). Always something.

I also have another VW pickup. I have to drop in a new engine and do some repairs before I sell it. I'm looking for a Veedub diesel wagon to replace the CP.

Ah do loves the cars, but it's a different world now.

86. That's what my dad said.
He had to calm me down after I bought it. Secretly, it's pretty damn cool.

The 928 is outrageous. Limited slip. Dual overhead cam, fuel injected v-8. Black boxes everywhere. 335 hp. Not much, really. But more than I can handle. If I wanted, I could bolt on a blower and get 450 hp. Maybe if I was bored.

My goal is to drive as little as possible. My racing days are long gone.
