Help Me Find a Legitimate Hurricane Katrina Fund for Christmas.
My company (a small corporation) would like to send a large donation to the victims of Hurricane Katrina in lieu of sending Christmas gifts to clients and vendors.

Can anybody suggest a legitimate fund for us to donate to (and the easier the process, the better) - I think this is a wonderful idea and I wish more corporations would follow suit. Thanks in advance for your input!

Happy Holidays!

1. Church World Service
Ecumenical group that reaches out across the world.

United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR)

100% of donations go directly to relief efforts.
(overhead is paid by our church apportionments)

2. Yes.
Camp Sister Spirit in Mississippi. Everyone focuses on NOLA but the entire south coast was devastated. And Camp Sister Spirit has done yoeman's work trying to feed, clothe and shelter the victims. Regardless of race, gender, politics, etc.

I guess selling a lebian group to your boss might be tough. But they need help.

Khash.

3. See my signature line.
John Grisham and his wife have set up a fund that they guarantee 100% of the monies raised will go to help the less fortunate rebuild on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

There are churches that not only give goods, they send volunteers to the MS Gulf Coast to help in the cleaning up and the rebuilding.

Lydia Leftcoast is coming as a volunteer with this group

Thank you for wanting to help and for wanting to make sure the donations are actually used to help folks here.

12. Thanks! I am specifically looking for one that really helps the people
who are suffering. Rebuilding NOLA is very important and a worthy goal, but I am sure there are families with immediate needs - I just want the bulk of the money to go to those who are suffering and not those who are going to make a buck off the rebuilding of the city.

I appreciate your input - Thanks agian!

4. the grisham fund suggested by the other poster is a good one
for more ideas here is a link to the funds suggested by nola.com

http://www.nola.com/hurricaneresources/

scroll down to "donate" to see list of organizations they recommend

if you give to an organization w. a larger purpose, such as habitat for humanity, specify the funds are to be used for katrina victims

indeed i think habitat for humanity is a good one, as they are building houses, and housing is what is badly needed now

6. Thanks guys for those great choices - I have to write up a proposal
and present it to my boss and CEO on Monday afternoon so I will include information from all these sites and let them pick.

Also, we are sending out cards and letters to our clients telling them we are donating in their names, but some of our clients are European and I was wondering if there was a good Pan-European or Global charity we could also contribute to in their names?

I would consider the Pakistan earthquake victims, and I know this sounds sick, but I wonder if it would be too political (a lot of our clients are in France, the UK and Germany). I don't think it should be an issue, but I know that some people might be touchy about it.

What do you guys think?

7. Here's a couple more of places.
www.commongroundrelief.org clinic and community building in Algies, LA, these are people from NO/Algiers working in solidarity with each other, welcoming volunteers from other places, but keeping control local.

unitedpeacerelief.org is a group of volunteers helping with CommonGround and varied places LA/MS doing health care, reconstruction. Grassroots volunteers who got together when VFP called for help after Camp Casey.

Then there is Rainbow people doing kitchen work, feeding people in MS. and Foodnot Bombs in NO and MS

Good idea and thanks.

11. Thank you!
These are great! At my last job, I got my boss to contribute $25,000 to Move-on.org (don't know why because he was a seriously wealthy, old establishment type - I think he just hated Bush.) and it would be great if I could try to get my company to cough up the $$ for a great cause instead of buying into the materialism of Christmas.
