DU Experts: What should I look for in a roofer?
I need some repairs to my roof, it's leaking here in my office. :-(

I need to get repairs done, and possibly a new roof at some point. Though, I'm hoping to skip by with a repair right now. I'm trying to save for a 2nd-hand car.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

1. See if there is a referral service in your area.
You might get a recommendation there.

But, in general, you want licensed, bonded, and someone who pays for workmen's comp for his/her employees.

3. Look for experience, first off, in my opinion.
Check references, too, on other jobs they've done.

I'm no expert, but we're gonna be in the new roof market ourselves in another few years. We just got new double-paned windows, so that was our big household expense for a while....

We're lucky to have a good friend who is a roofer. I'd ask all your friends, locally, if they have any recommendations. Just put it out there...

Good luck! :hi:

6. Go to Angie's List
You will find ratings for local service providers (roofers, handymen, landscaping, plumbers) from the people in your area that have actually used them. I have found them very handy when needing something done and don't have time to ask around to find someone reputable.

7. Ask any of the neighbors who've had work done for referrals
and get several estimates.

I just got a new roof put on my Dad's. I had called four places reccommended by my professional organization (I deal with contractors for a living so they maintain a list of good ones) and got estimates when on a whim my father stopped at a neighbors on his way to work and asked who had done thier new roof. They gave him the name and number and sung the man's praises to the moon. I called thier roofer and got an estimate from him, which came in $2K less than the others (this was a complete re-roof with extensive dryrot, so we were talking somewhere in the price range of a new economy car) and after meeting with him I just had a better feeling about him for some reason. The new roof is beautiful and the house looks a million times better.

The moral of the story: ask your friends and neighbors for referrals, especially if you live in a subdivision and all have the same house.

11. Hey, whatever happened to the Coke Break guy?
You know that commercial from the 80s where all the office worker women rush to the window exclaiming "Time for a Coke break!"

12. Should be semi-tight and evenly rolled
Not too tight though because it won't burn well.

Oh, sorry, thought you said "reefer."
