Poll question: Time, Newsweek or U.S. News & World Report?
I have a friend who can get me a free subscription to one of these magazines, no strings attached. Should I get one?

1. They are all the same
The formats and graphics vary, but they are all just State Dept/White House/Pentagon propaganda sheets.

Better to get The Nation - the oldest newsweekly in the U.S., and miles ahead of those wretched rags.

2. I have a friend who's on the copy desk at 'Snews
When my free subscription via Salon expired, I told her I wasn't renewing because of that fucking assclod John Leo. (She agreed with me; she can't stand him on a personal level.)

USN&WR makes feeble attempts at balance but falls short. I haven't seen the others as much, but from what I have seen I don't think they're much different.

5. John Leo...
..the vanguard of the "Christians and 'Patriots' as Victims" movement.

Then you have Mort "Israel's shit doesn't stink" Zuckerman.

3. I'd go with Newsweek
Its stories tend to be the most interesting and it actually features a couple of liberal columnists (though, unfortunately, George Will gets featured regularly.)

I'm currently subscribed to U.S. News and World Report (I got a college student discount) and do like the fact that they seem to feature the most "hard news" of the three. However, the conservative slant of the featured columnists bug the hell out of me. How does running right-wingers John Leo and Michael Barone alongside columns by the conservative to middle of the road editors Mort Zuckerman and David Gergen and basically nonideological journalist Gloria Borger (these are the columnists I've noticed in the last several issues; I'm not sure if there are other regulars) bring any sort of balance? Does their editorial board have some sort of restriction against running a liberal columnist?

4. U.S. News is extremely right-wing
Their entire bias is RW across the board. They were BIG backers of Reagan in the 80's, relentless bashers of Clinton, and their slant continues with Bush.

Even their covers are RW shit.

Save your money, and cancel your subscription. You can be better informed by reading LBN.

7. I don't read any of the above
I get The Economist and The Nation each week plus several others on a monthly or semi-montly basis. They are, IMO, better than the others.
