Mandatory reading for all poster's on DU
http://www.apostrophe.fsnet.co.uk/

"The Apostrophe Protection Society was started in 2001 by John Richards, now its Chairman, with the specific aim of preserving the correct use of this currently much abused punctuation mark in all forms of text written in the English language."

7. Like English has an apostrophe problem
I mean take German: now there's a language with an endangered correct apostrophe. It was swamped by all the uses of the "Idiot's apostrophe".

In my opinion, the semicolon deserves more attention; it is sorely underused and ignored by most poster's. :P

21. Regarding item 3 in link:
This causes me to wonder about the title of this thread....or am I missing something here? I have also noticed the plural "apostrophe" written "apostrophe's" throughout this thread...perhaps I AM missing something here! (Not trying to be a punctuation snob...just pointing out something I learned in this link).

Next question: Do you use a period after or before a ")"?
I think it is after but I am not certain if this.

btw: There is much I need improvement on with punctuation, your link has provided me with a little enlightenment dolo amber. Thanks for posting.

I recall reading in some style guide somewhere that occasionally it was acceptable to denote plurals using an apostrophe if it made things less confusing. I believe in some circles 1,000's is perfectly acceptable and correct, but I have to double check that.

I'm writing my first book and have been obsessed with such details lately. Don't want my editors to laugh too hard.

On edit: Ha! Found it in Wikipedia:

From Wikipedia:
An apostrophe (French, from the Greek αποστροφος προσωδια, the accent of elision) ( ’ ) is a punctuation and sometimes diacritic mark in languages written in the Latin alphabet. In English, it marks omissions, forms the possessive, and, in special cases, assists in forming plurals.
...
An apostrophe is used by some writers to form a plural for abbreviations and symbols where adding just s rather than ’s would be ambiguous. While British English did formerly endorse the use of such apostrophes after numbers and dates, this usage has now largely been superseded.
...
For the plural of single lower-case letters, such as mind your p's and q's

Aha, there it is. I was wrong about 1000's but p's and q's is actually the example I remember.
