I Got a Job Today!
I had a decent job until the beginning of Nov., but got my ass laid off on 11/2.

I'm glad that I got the offer. It's a crappy job and I'm only getting $9.25 an hour, but I'll have health insurance after 90 days.

I guess that president moron is right when he says that the economy is getting better. :sarcasm:

In fairness, when I got laid off on 11/2, I didn't think I'd have a paycheck before Christmas, and I will now. First pay will be 12/23, so I can do a little last minute shopping.

I have come to the inescapable conclusion that ChicaAzul and I will only get our family where we want to be (and believe me, our dreams are MODEST) by doing for ourselves. We have ideas for 2 specific businesses, and are going to investigate both. We're tired of depending on others for our checks. My former bosses knew that they were putting a 50 year old man with a family out on his ass. They only cared about the bottom line. We have to do something that we can insure checks coming in.

Anyway, thanks for listening to my minor rant. I'm happy o be earning again, but I will trust no boss in the future!

it's the only way to make it. And be good to your employees. They will reward you for it.

And Congrats on the new job.

17. Be Good To Employees!
Absolutely!

The only potential problem with that is that they might not know that I'm a boss, not treating them like crap and all.

12. Excellent!
I very much feel your pain -- things are looking up for me but I've been on the edge of financial oblivion too much in the last couple of years -- and you are right that the best of all posible solutions, all things being equal, is to work for yourself. And, yes, it seems to be increasingly the case that the botom line is all that matters. There is no such thing as job security any more and anyone who thinks that there is has themselves dangerously deluded. You've always got to be prepared for the axe to fall, on you or the whole outfit, and have an escape plan (if not particular contacts and jobs, at least the job-hunting package and resources up-to-date) in place. This even applies to a lot of government workers, these days, and it's been my observation (overseas) that when government workers are vulnerable the whole nation is obviously in very big trouble.

Sure, your new pay and job may not be ideal, but whoever said money is unimportant never had the considerable and deleterious stress of having to come up with rent/payments/etc when the funds are depleted and you're still looking for a job. Low pay is better than no pay, until better can be found. And, in this country with its totally shameful health 'care' 'system' (well, there are some bright lights, but the US in general is worse than many developing nations in the access its citizens have to health care, and it's a rip-off), health insurance can bring a degree of peace-of-mnd. Especially if, like you, you have a family. I'm glad that you have an income again...nobody needs that kind of stress.

I wish you the very best in realizing your ambitions for self-employment. I think it's the ideal, usually. I've had some degree of self-employed work before and have ideas for much more, in various endeavors (likely I'll get going on more than one, simultaneously, as before), and so I know how you feel -- exciting possibilities and, depending on what it is that you want to do, the risk and initial investment may be more minimal than many might assume. No less risky than just holding a 'regular' job in this day and age, anyway. And -- again, depending upon what you have in mind for your businesses -- it'd be great if you could get them off the ground and running while you still work your 'day job.' A segue to self-employment sounds better than quitting a job and starting cold, with no safety net.

Good luck!

19. Great Points, ForrestGump!
much like ChicaAzul & I are thinking.

One business idea's start up cost would be VERY minimal, and I'd be able to work it into my schedule!

We're not looking to be Bill & Melinda Gates, just to have a house, decent cars and our son educated.

In the world according to bush, that's unreasonable. We should be willing to offer him for cannon fodder for a future war! :sarcasm:

29. I'm tired of having a boss, too.
I am really uncomfortable with the idea of depending on someone else's whims to make sure me and my kid can eat.

Unluckily (luckily sometimes too) I work for a very small company and I feel that so much more than I did. The person who puts food on my table, I see every single day and it's never far out of my mind.

And I have a good boss!

So congrats on the job, but better luck with the businesses!

...after all, it's a lot more than $0.00. It is, however, significantly less than I used to get.

I don't know how people are expected to live on $515. Best of luck to you!

Obscene!

They want you to starve and be disabled, too? This is very unfair!

Pizza is good. I'm in recovery (16 years in jan. of '06), so I'll go with a Pepsi!
