1. Yes. Rather a lot, really. Used to work at the executive level
at a couple multinational firms.

:-)

Also have a number of friends who are millionaires.

4. Personally?
Not that I'm aware of. But then, I don't generally ask people what they're worth, so it's possible that I've known a couple... who knows?!

7. Actually yes
friends of the family. I actually dated their son in high school. The mother is a stock broker and the father owns a pharmacy and is a pharmacist. And they are the nicest, most down to earth people...you'd never guess they are super rich, except that they like expensive wine. That's really the only snooty thing about them. They have a wine cellar. They also adopted a girl from India which is kind of unusual for rich people who aren't celebrities- lots of people want a kid who looks like them, and their daughter sure does not! :)

9. They have
a wine cellar in their house!
That would be cool- I love wine, but I like the cheap kind just as well as the expensive. Not that I've ever had expensive wine. I just imagine it would be good. :)

15. yes
but the nice thing about the millionaires i know /have known is that they would be horrified if they thought i knew that about them. or if i thought about that regarding them.

it is most difficult to know how much money a person has - unless they talk about it - and that truly would be most tacky and distasteful.

so, how do you know if your friend is a millionaire? to me, it does not matter.

16. Define millionaire.
Technically I own a company that does $600k a year in business and has been appraised at about $1.5 million. Since I'm the sole owner, that technically makes me a millionaire.

Of course, the business only put about $30,000 in my pocket last year. The rest went to my employees, taxes, and into the business. I have to teach to pay my bills and let OTHER people run my company :)

19. exactly, total net worth?
I probably know thirty people, my parent's friends, worth a million dollars, if you liquidated everything. a million dollars a year? I know that too. So whatever. some are snobs, most are normal people you'd never know about. And frankly, a million bucks ain't that much money any more.

21. Lots of paper millionaires from the real estate market too.
My parents are millionaires on paper because of the real estate boom. They paid $18,000 for their house here in California in the 1970's, and it's worth $500k today. They paid $175k for their ranch in Oregon in the 1980's, and it's worth $1.1 million today. They also own my sisters home, which was originally purchased for $80k a decade ago but is worth about $400k today.

And yet, they live on my dads small retirement, and you'd never know their actual "worth" by meeting them.

Wealth can be a deceptive concept, and a million bucks isn't what it used to be. Most "millionaires" aren't even in the top 5% anymore.

23. there isn't much "clean money" around, LeftMom.
...wealthy usually equals unscrupulous behaviour, either directly, or at arms' length, through some "legitimate" banker in a nice suit.
