The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Tue 12/6/05)
You who never arrived

You who never arrived
in my arms, Beloved, who were lost
from the start
I don't even know what songs
would please you. I have given up trying
to recognize you in the surging wave of the next
moment. All the immense
images in me--the far-off, deeply-felt landscape,
cities, towers, and bridges, and un-
suspected turns in the path,
and those powerful lands that were once
pulsing with the life of the gods--
all rise within me to mean
you, who forever elude me.

You, Beloved, who are all
the gardens I have ever gazed at,
longing. An open window
in a country house--, and you almost
stepped out, pensive, to meet me. Streets that I chanced upon,--
you had just walked down them and vanished.
And sometimes, in a shop, the mirrors
were still dizzy with your presence and, startled, gave back
my too-sudden image. Who knows? perhaps the same
bird echoed through both of us
yesterday, separate, in the evening...

Rainer Maria Rilke

I don't know exactly why.

8. Feeling like a useless unwanted piece of shit at times
then other times, well, quite the opposite indeed.

The pull in 2 directions is tearing me apart today...

It might be time to look at that third option and just go away.

10. Emotional Cartography
Yes, I need a map of the heart, so I can avoid hanging out in the bad neighborhoods I always seem to end up in and find somewhere that I can settle down where I will be truly appreciated, loved and needed.

16. Aw, sweetheart, even if you avoid the "bad neighborhoods,"
the riff-raff can still wander into the good ones.

19. That's what the emotional walls are for
and I think I remember how to build them tall enough and deep enough and add enough razor wire to keep people out.

I just wish I could do it as easily as I used to...

21. Hey there, RL
I'm back. Interesting poem. There's a world of difference between "could have been" and "still to come".

Reading your posts I sure wish we could go out for a pitcher and some onion rings and talk talk talk.

Somewhere warm I hope...

A pitcher and rings sounds real good about now.

As does some talk talk talk.

23. I was away for an extended weekend.
Got to use a friend's beach house. It was very calming and serene. Sunday was warm enough to walk on the beach in shirt sleeves and then Monday it snowed. It's good to see you and read some poetry with you again. :hi: :pals:

24. My dear RetroLounge....
Here we are again with you, all your dear DU friends.....

You help us, and we in turn help you......I hope!

This is a lovely poignant poem, full of missed opportunities and so much longing that it is palpable......

VERY beautiful, my dear.......

I also noticed that your sig line is by Rainer Maria Rilke.....

It is also beautiful......

All of this ties together and speaks to me.......

I wish for you peace, joy, love and hope......but mostly love, my dear...

:loveya:

25. My dear Peggy...
Thank you so much. I am glad you are enjoying these poems.

My life seems to have many missed opportunities and so much longing, and I do not want to miss out on life anymore. I think it's time to quit wallowing and get busy living or get busy dying, metaphorically speaking, of course.

29. What you said here reminded me of a line in the movie
"Shawshank Redemption"......"You're either busy living or you're busy dying." Or words to that effect......

If you haven't seen that, BTW, then I recommend it.....it is one terrific movie anytime!

I'm going to post this for a couple friends I know who have recently lost babies... it really speaks to that, too, I think.
