in 'n out (best hamburgers, part 2)
ok, a couple weeks ago i ran a poll here asking for your favorite burger. mine was white castle's. wendy's easily scored the highest in the poll.

several people mentioned in 'n out, a place i had never heard of. i'm in california right now and i saw one so i stopped in for a burger.

instead of mustard and catsup, they put what they call "the spread" on their burgers. the spread is a mayonaise based, thousand island type thing. no mayo for me....i told him to hold the spread. anyway, the burger was OK, much better than mickey dee's or burger king but not exceptional. the fries were mediocre at best.

the impressive thing about the place to me was that, like white castle's, it seems to be a late night hangout for degenerates.....so i felt at home in that respect.

1. Gato, my brother
as you travel, please consider moving east.

Somewhere in East Texas, or perhaps across the Louisiana line, you'll hit your first Krystal. Get two dozen. That should carry you until you hit central Alabama and your first "Milo's." You'll want to stop for awhile. It's the only sincerely offered, multi-store gravy burger you'll ever care to eat. You'll be forever ruined. The sweet tea will be your confirmation.

The only antidote is to swing north and west to East Florence, Alabama, where, if you arrive at lunchtime, you might score a burger at Staggs' Grocery.

If you do, stop. Test not another burger. You're done. Go live under the new bridge. Paradise is yours.

2. which came first?
krystal's or white castle's?

i have had krystal's and always thought they were copycats of sliders. i also thought they were not nearly as good as sliders.

so, i take it that you feel the southeastern US is the fertile crescent of the hamburger.

4. Certainly no "Fertile Crescent,"
for burgers, just a Mecca.

I freely admit of ignorance of the burgers of the West.

Krystals did post-date the first White Castle. And Krystal formed a good ways away.

And the "plain White Castle" and the "plain Krystal" are differently dressed.

Every time I've ever entered a White Castle, I've ordered my Sliders Krystal-style: pickles and mustard. Cheese is a bonus.

Anyway, Milo's is the only place I've found to offer a gravy-burger.

If I could figure out the gravy, I'd already be in business.

3. Their french fries are cut fresh and fried
never frozen. The spread is good...

5. Note that In-N-Out also treats its employees

like human beings. They start at like $8 an hour as opposed to your fast-food-typical minimum wage, and I believe they get benefits as well. The owner is reputedly a fundie, but if so he's apparently an exception to the rule.

If you know the "codes," you can order "special" stuff at In-N-Out, like a Triple Triple. :9 http://www.in-n-out.com/secretmenu.asp

On edit: Employment info from the web site:

We start all our new Associates at a minimum of $9.00 an hour for one simple reason...you are important to us! And our commitment to a higher starting wage is just one of the ways in which we show it. Another way is through offering excellent benefits like flexible schedules to accommodate school and other activities, paid vacations, free meals, comprehensive training, and a 401k plan. For our full time Associates, we provide a benefits package that also includes medical, dental, vision, life and travel insurance coverage.

Ain't like McDonald's, is it?

6. A fundie apparently runs Chick Fil-A
That's why they're all closed on Sundays.

I always thought fairly well of Chick Fil-A until I heard recently that they're including Dobson stuff in their kids meals.

Ewwww!

Still trying to confirm.

Gack!

And yet it's the best fried chicken sandwich there is.
