Why do dog paws smell like Fritos?
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 09:06 PM by Scout1071
Weird. Every dog I've ever owned.

Edited to ask: Why do Fritos smell like dog paws?

1. So I'm not the only one who's noticed this? I said this in 1964.
And my parents called me "sick" for even smelling my dog's paw.

2. I can't help it!
My boxer put his paw on my shoulder trying to be playful and I got a nose full - sometimes that happens.

Either way, I can't explain it.

6. I think it's a salty smell -- unless they've been running in manure!
Fritos have a lot of salt in them. So perhaps it's some kind of a chloride that they excrete through their paws.

The smell I hate is "WET" dog! That is ghastly, no matter what breed you own...

7. Well, piss is uric acid -- it is a salty smell or an acid smell?
My last dog died in 1988 and now all I have is plush animals for the grandkids.

21. Some scientists actually researched it. They determined it's urine.
Although they described the dog feet smell as resembling popcorn rather than fritos.

If only I could remember important things as easily as useless trivia... :silly:

22. So, is it just evaporating out of their paws?
My dog doesn't step in his own urine. Not that I know of anyway.

24. I tried to google the study but I couldn't find it.
I think I saw it on Animal Planet about a year ago. I don't remember the details. All I remember was people saying their dog's paws smelled like popcorn and the researchers determining that the smell was actually urine. :wtf:

26. Popcorn! That's it! When my dog was up on the couch, I always smelled
popcorn and wanted to watch a movie! You've got it!

(Just seen: "Wolf Creek" an Australian thriller movie which is only LOOSELY based on a real story. Opening soon but in limited release. Very good -- but quite gory.)

4. When you aren't at home, the dog vegges out on the couch
eating Fritos. Maybe you could try leaving some oranges lying around. That way when he munches and watches television when you are away, he will be unwittingly washing his paws.

10. Thanks, Scout! I love your single palm tree! Memories of my
upbringing in Florida. Here's a lousy-looking painted one they used in the 1940s to photograph our family. Dad, Mom and me, an only child.

that Frito's smelled like smelly feet. Dog paws, even! But certainly ripe feet. Yuck! I've never mentioned it to a soul for fear of being ridiculed.

The scary thing is that it doesn't change my mind about Frito's. I still kind of like them. But really only with the Frito-Lay hot bean dip. Wow...haven't had that in ages.

33. LynzM, did you go smell them? I'm guessing there were many of us
smelling dog paws when we read this thread.

I did. I didn't smell Fritos or popcorn, but my nose is kinda stuffed up this morning.

My dog looked at me like :wtf:

Is this thread a conspiracy to make dog owners look silly?

25. Corollary: how come everyone knows what wet dog smells like
but nobody knows what wet cat smells like?

I mean, cats groom themselves constantly, surely someone must have noticed what they smell like when they're dampish, at least... :P

29. From the following link, we learn how dogs sweat --
http://www.lookd.com/dogs/anatomy.html

"The fairly thin tongue of the dog is used mainly for guiding food to the throat, for licking the coat clean, and for perspiration. When a dog is overheated, it cools off by hanging its tongue out and panting. As it pants, the evaporation of perspiration from its tongue cools the animal. The dog also sweats through the pads on its paws and--slightly--through its skin."

I for one have never smelled cat's paws -- mostly afraid of those sharp retractable claws.

But I do remember Cat's Paw soles for shoes -- whatever happened to them?

I work at home, so she rarely gets there before me. Still, I try to stay away from her mouth and her breath.

Frito's.

So weird. Even if it is urine seeping thru their little pads.
