A certain familiarity with the movie "This is Spinal Tap" might help.

Here's a hint: They have just wrapped up a world tour and released a live DVD from Budokan.

I can't remember from Spinal Tap.

It looks like a genetic mixup of Nirvana and the Alman Brothers. Nirvalman?

Shoot. I thought I knew every fricking band there was. You win.

edit- Nice fro!

10. Isn't that something?
;)

It's like watching Spinal Tap change from "Cups and Cakes" to Big Bottoms!"

Kinda cool to see how they were already breakin' down barriers as to who could play heavy metal. Which at the time of this photo wasn't really being applied to the music in a general sense.

Oh yeah for the curious, the stuff they played in this era sounds pretty much like these guys look! :headbang:

11. That is a weird picture.
It took a while to figure what was going on there.

They got Halford back as a singer recently.

12. They're playing the intro to Breaking the Law,
here's a question, should Rob be credited as a guitarist on this tour? ;)

30 years into it, some bands fizzle and fade, others all that practice pays off--I know most DUers aren't big Priest fans, but every show I've seen of theirs has been superlative. Especially now, with a re-invigorated Rob Halford still belting it out. He doesn't hit the high stuff as often, but is so TOTALLY in command of his voice. Wow.

13. Unfortunately, I never paid much attention to J Priest.
I have suddenly realized that I know nothing about U2 and Priest. It's because I've been listening to all of the non-mainstream music. Damn, I didn't know they were so amazing.
I mean, King Missile and Mondo Topless, and Ass Baboons of Venus were great. But they might have lasted three years. These other bands have been here for decades. And they played amazing stuff. I really missed out. Now I'm trying to go back and catch up.

There's only so much time in life. We chose one thing at the cost of something else. Also, Priest was not where I was at. I had to evolve from classical and jazz performing and training, to opening my mind. Ah. Enough of my philosophizing. Time to buy some cd's.

14. I'll admit Pirest is kind of an aquired taste, and if you're in the mood
for aquiring it I'd almost recommend starting with the most recent (Mid November 2005) Rising in the East DVD--it's a good cross section of their past and when you see them live, you're a lot more willing to forgive the banal lyrics. There songs are tyically not "about" things it's more of vehicle for the melody.

If you listen close though they do have a few recurring themes, mainly centered on the struggle of the individual against a society crushing down upon them.

Be prepared for some macho guitar though! :hi:

15. I love macho guitbox
Power chords baby! That's what really got me when I heard Priest again.

I'm still really into punk. I think metal, punk, and hip hop go together quite well.

Right now I'm listening to:

The Germs
Social Insects
Verbal Abuse
Dagnasty
Minor Threat

I love this stuff. It's like a private world. Kind of like DU.

8. I just listened to Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed
Great tune.

Hey, I really like your monkey suit picture. Dramatic. I can't think of anything witty to say, so I didn't post.
