Pope: "Sin Is Not Fun"
*cough* bullshit *cough*

<snip>

THE Pope told Catholics yesterday that being good was not boring and urged people to reject the idea that they were missing out if they did not sin.

Pope Benedict made his comments at St Peter's Basilica, Rome, to mark the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

"The suspicion emerges in us that a person who does not sin is, after all, boring; that something is missing from his life: the dramatic dimension of being free ... but looking at the world around us we can see that this is not so," he said.

And they are far bigger sinners. Never mind how Pope Benedict Arnold influenced the 2004 US election, he can go enlist himself.

16. What the hell is sin?
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 10:10 AM by ismnotwasm
(I know what he means)
But it's a stupid blanket term for behavior that for some people is not "sinful"
I don't think when I drop a heavy object (say a hammer) on my foot and say godmadmotherfuckerfuckfuckfuckshitstupidbastardpieceofSHITmotherfuckerGODAMit- because it hurts that I've committed a sin. I feel it's a perfectly appropriate response.
Now, if I picked up the hammer and threw it at the cats head, well, maybe then I'm in the realm of sin. Or a need for anger management. Or a valium or something.

21. You know, I kind of find myself agreeing with him.
I mean, maybe this is a bit too heavy for the lounge. And I also doubt if my idea of "sin" is the same as the Pope's, because I would define "sin" as "things that are bad for us and the world." And so, for example, although staying out till 4 am having casual sex, drinking til you puke and smoking like a chimney does in fact supply immediate gratification, there are also consequences, i.e. picking up some random person (possibly icky), maybe puking, and nice black chimney-like lungs. Short term, feels good, long term, bad for you. Now, add five years and turn that person into someone who's decided to pursue a healthier way of life -- maybe it's just the years talking here -- but a Friday evening spent going to a yoga class, eating at a raw foods cafe, and pursuing a meaningful relationship with a loved significant other -- all of that, although it sounds boring to the person who is all about pursuing the nightlife scene, can in fact be (although in a more subtle way) quite satisfying and fulfilling.
