(CNN) -- Yoko Ono paid a rare public homage to her late husband on Thursday as scores of others lit candles, played songs and shared their memories of John Lennon.

Twenty-five years after his death, fans and mourners assembled in New York's Central Park to pay tribute to the former Beatle.

It was a scene played out around the world to mark the day in 1980 that Lennon was shot and killed by a crazed fan.

Ono, who traditionally lights a candle in her apartment window to mark the anniversary, was escorted to the memorial by New York City police.

Ono -- dressed in black and wearing large sunglasses -- spent several minutes looking at flowers and messages places at the "Imagine" mosaic that is the centerpiece of "Strawberry Fields," a section of Central Park across the street from her apartment building.

2. The most terrible day in the history of music is?
The day that John Lennon said, "Hey Mates meet my new girlfriend Yoko, Yoko the band."

3. That's cruel
Still blaming little Yoko for breaking up the Beatles.

Hey, those sunglasses don't look large to me at all. Just shows you can't trust the media.

4. Not a fan of Yoko, but I'm sick of the jokes
She and John loved each other. He was murdered right in front of her. How traumatic that must have been.

5. No shit. It's almost a tradition to bash Yoko.
If she was good enough for John, she's ok by me.

6. He obviously loved her...and she him.
She raised his son into a fine young man. It's time to put that to rest. :hi:
