WIMR Here, Reporting On the Hotheads (Myself Included) in GD...
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 06:55 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
Just got back from GD, and I know how the Lizards get a kick out of the antics over there. I know, I know, I said I'd stay away until the flame war over Stanley Williams cooled down, but it's like a drug...I just couldn't stop. I got totally suckered into a couple heated debates, though I know it wasn't smart at all. But even more sickening and yet exhilirating than debating was watching others debate.

GD has officially gone MAD, I tell ya, MAD. Forget intelligent debate--we're reduced to mudslinging, yelling, hand-wringing, and a general state of chaos. They talk about possible riots in LA...There already is a mini-riot of sorts over there. ALmost every topic I saw on the front page was something to do with Tookie, and within the first ten posts of every Tookie topic, a flame war had begun.

Absolutely insane.

If you've got the popcorn--and the stomach for it--just pop into GD for a sec and take a look around. You don't even have to post anything. In small doses, it's almost amusing. Afterwards, it just gets tiresome and annoying.

How is it possible to feel so exhilirated over debate and yet sad that the debate has gotten so low-quality among fellow progressives????? *scratches head*

I need a hug and a cool drink (nonalcoholic, mind you :D :D)...

Over and out,

WIMR

1. You know, this is depressing
This sounds like one of those "just got back from Freeperville" posts. To think that DU has sunk to such levels!

2. I dropped in briefly,
that was enough for me.

I'll wait until Thursday, after the gloaters clear out.

Already went through this elsewhere. Disappointing to say the least.

9. I do agree, though...
it's much worse knowing it's happening on a progressive board.

*sigh*

13. A wise woman once told me not to get all riled up by things
that I have absolutly no control over...

The way people should channel the Tookie emotion is to fight like hell to change the way prisoners are sentanced....

14. That would be the wise thing to do.
Unfortunately, wisdom is NOT the order of the day over there.

They all just need to release their feverpitched emotions.

15. The problem is too many people are venting and releasing
in forums and not stepping away from the computer enough to get right into the politcal fights raging out beyond cyber space....

17. It's always possible to have an intelligent discussion in GD
In fact, it's kind of a challenge: you have to know your stuff cold and be as unemotional as possible. I've found myself rethinking some of my ideas when I found that I wasn't as knowledgeable as I thought I was about them.

And the minute you begin to get emotional, it all goes to hell. There are times to point out your thinking, times when doing so stands a fair chance of being well-received. But you have to pick the right thread, and even the right moment in that thread, to make your point. If you jump in the first place you see an opening, you miss being able to pick out the context that will help prove your argument.

That said, I have not posted a single thing in any of the Tookie threads.

18. Went there and didn't post.
A childhood friend was murdered and her murdered was executed by the state yet I'm still anti-DP. I'm not in a mood to get into an argument w/ the gloaters tonight.
