Why will my computer not turn on?
My desktop just turned off the other day, and it won't turn back on.

Not "it won't boot", but it literally will not turn on. I've checked the cord, and tried another outlet, and nothing.

I'm going to tear it apart this afternoon and see what's inside, but if anyone has any idea of what might be best to look for, please let me know.

1. Blew a fuse?
Does other stuff in the outlet work?

2. Yeah, everything else works, and plugging it into another outlet
didn't change anything.

Thanks for the fuse tip - I hadn't even thought of that! I'm sure there is one inside the computer.

3. Coupla things to check
(1) The power switch on the BACK of the PSU isn't switched off

(2) The ATX power connection from the PSU to the motherboard (it's the big fuck-off plug on the motherboard)

(3) The power switch connector from the front of the case to the motherboard (be wary about pulling this out, it's grouped with a number of connectors and connecting them up again right is a real pain in the ass).

If both of those look okay, then the problem lies either with the PSU or the motherboard. Try another PSU first because that's a lot less hassle than changing a motherboard. In fact, if you're not experienced at building computers, probably easier to buy a new one rather than change one of those.

5. Even if you have to take it in
it's going to be cheaper to have the power supply replaced than to replace the entire machine. Swapping out a power supply takes 5 minutes max, if the tech is dragging his feet and running his mouth. If the supply is bad, I'd recommend an Antec - they make some really nice supplies. Get a 350-400 watt one.

9. I was talking about the mobo
Changing one of those involves taking every single thing out.

6. It may have been infected with the Kinkade virus
Place the computer deep in a closet. Do NOT expose it to light! Then, once it boots up, use the simple Kinkade eradication tool available from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. :-)

...the power supply (or cord, or fuse as noted above) is probably bad. There may be a circuit breaker that's tripped and could be reset?

advice and offed itself in due haste.

Sorry, man.
