I am a certain amount of redneck myself, raised in rural Arkansas. But I see the effects of this type of crap every day in my classrooms.

It's the way a lot of people live. The way a lot of people have to live. And they like it that way. I see nothing wrong with it. And what do you mean by backwards and ignorant?

I like the song. It has a good beat to it. Gretchen Wilson might be a repub (?not sure) but, that song just shows that a lot of people appreciate where they come from. Nothing wrong with that.

It matters not to me; I simply do not like the song.

Certainly you have your musical tastes. But the song describes a lot of people's lifestyles. I wasn't sure if you didn't like the song b/c of the message.

And does it really matter that it isn't your lifestyle? I listen to a lot of blues music that doesn't fit my lifestyle, but it is still reality for a lot of people! I don't really understand.

Sorry, if you're here, you aren't a redneck. Cowboys, Country types, Blue Collar Workers, yes. Rednecks? No.

Rednecks have Confederate Flag stickers on the backs of their trucks. They join the KKK. Country music, southern accent and working class does not a redneck make. It might make you strong in character, but it will not make you a redneck...you're better than that...

But I have no problem being called a redneck, and I have no doubts about my progressive politics. My family has deep roots in Alabama, where I was born and raised. My grandfather and all three of his brothers were county agents, men who worked for the extension service, finding ways to support rural farmers and, in the process, build stronger communities in our state and improve relations between blacks and whites. I am intensely proud of my family history in that regard, and the origins of the word "redneck" that are rooted in the sunburned necks of poor white farmers in the Deep South are nothing to be ashamed of for me.

Are there ignorant and racist rednecks around? There always have been and always will be, I'm afraid. But the same could be said about any random sample of residents of any state or region in this country.

But there were and still are many, many honest and decent "rednecks" about the South, and I see no reason for me to buy into a stereotype created by the Hollywood machine which has little use for me, my vote, or my efforts on behalf of peace and justice and a democratic United States. That stuff, you see, just doesn't sell as well as two good ol' boys, a chick in miniscule shorts, and an overblown buffoon of a small town sheriff in the Deep South.

But oh, how I wish it did.

Thing is, in California, redneck IS a big insult. Warranted or not, over here its equated with the confederate flag.

My uncle would probably be considered a redneck in the south. He likes to hunt, is blue collar all the way (Past Union President even) and drives a truck. But he'd smack me silly if I called him one. Good Ol' boy yes...redneck no.

And yes, Dukes of Hazarrd was a horrible show, but the micromini shorts did almost redeem that show...

To my friends here, who I drink beer - or Jack and coke - and watch college football with, take our kids to the county fair with, have girls' night out at the local Mexican joint with.... I'm a proud redneck woman, just like they are.

Play Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" when we're around, and we'll stand and sing along. Insult the South, and we'll get redneck on your ass. We love our silly daisy duke shorts and Bud Light in a bottle all summer long. I've seen Jimmy Buffet in concert nine times, and know all the words to way more of his songs than just those on his "Songs You Know by Heart" album.

That's me. That's who I am, my friend.

But I am also a tenacious fighter for and believer in justice. I don't fuck around when it comes to issues of right and wrong, especially in my hometown. The problem is, many of us feel we are fighting the well-established demons at home, while having to simultaneously defend ourselves against stereotype-fueled attacks from folks elsewhere who ought to be in our corner.

It's a saying we have here in the South "American by birth, Southern by the grace of God." That doesn't mean we are all fundamentalist Christians or even Christian at all. That simply means we believe we are blessed to live in the South, where the pace is slower, the smiles friendlier, the loyalties deeper and the love of who we are and where we have come from runs deep. Southlandshari explained to you where the term "redneck" derived. The rednecks of our past were the lower/middle class farmers and workers that toiled in the fields and at their jobs to build a better life for their families and a better community to live in. Why would I be ashamed to be that determined and dedicated?

Southerners have been slapped in the face with our past for years and we have made great strides to overcome the smear on our souls that was created when our leaders and many of our people fought to continue segregation. We have struggled against the stereotypes that would have the rest of the world believe we are racists and back-wards and we struggle against those stereotypes every day. We have to, the rest of the world won't let us forget our horrible mistakes and/or they choose to believe in the bigoted stereotypes created by Hollywood out of ignorance.

We Southerners do wear shoes. Did you realize that shoes were first sold in boxes in pairs (right foot and left foot) in 1884, in Vicksburg, Mississippi? The majority of us can read and write. Interesting facts about Mississippi, the first co-educational college in the United States to grant a degree to a woman was Mississippi College, in Clinton, Mississippi, and Mississippi University for Women was the first state college for women in the nation. We aren't all backwoods or back-wards and many have a strong love of culture. Hell, Jackson, Mississippi, is the official home of the USA International Ballet Competition and has been since 1982. Go look at how many famous writers, blues musicians, entertainers and celebrities hail from Mississippi, I think you will find the list interesting.

We aren't all racists in the South and many of us are very progressive as we see the values that are nation stands for as absolute, not something that can be traded or compromised. Did you realize that Mississippi was one of the first states in the Union to allow women to own property and that did not threat them solely as chattel? Did you realize that even during the days of slavery, slaves were allowed to sue their masters for abuse and mistreatment. I know, you are thinking to yourself how can one be proud of that given that it is an acknowledgment of slavery. I say to you that all states in the union had slaves (and not just African American slaves), our founding fathers were slave owners and given the fact that slavery was an accepted part of the culture of the United States, it was pretty darned progressive to allow slaves to sue their masters in the 1800's.

The majority of Southerners hang their heads in shame at what happened during the civil rights struggles. When Edgar Ray Killen and Byron De La Beckwith were facing trials for their involvement in murders of those working for civil rights in the '60s, the majority of Mississippians, white and black, shared the same desire and that was to see that justice was had and that both men face trial. When they were convicted, there was a collective sigh of relief, finally some of the wounds of our citizens could be healed. I don't know of any other states that have gone out of their way to try folks for the atrocities of the civil rights era some 40 years later.

Are there backwoods or back-wards racist rednecks in the South? Well there are some that would fit your stereotype, but most don't even come close to it. Interestingly enough, there are racists rednecks all over the USofA, in every community, in every state. They don't belong to us.

Do we have racism in the South? Yes, but so do all of the other states in the union. Many of the Southerners I know have made the conscious decision to live here and to fight against the injustices, to make our home states better. We don't see leaving as an alternative because we love our way of life, our people, our communities and our families. We want to stay here and help bring about change. Many of us struggle daily and live the lives that many on this board only pontificate about. We fight for civil rights and justice, we believe in our families, our home towns, our nation and each other.

The indomitable spirit in the South is something to marvel at and now, with the devastation left by Katrina, you can see it with your own eyes if you would venture out of your California bubble. The folks here have seen horrible destruction and they have not given up. They are working together, side by side, all races, all creeds, all colors and all sexes. The determination to build back our lives, to reconstruct the communities that made the region its own paradise, simpler, slower paced and giving, is strong and is what will restore the communities. We listen to the promises of our leaders, but we don't wait for them to fulfill those promises before we begin to reclaim what we love -- our communities. And our necks are red from working in the sun, removing the debris, cleaning our properties, recovering our belongings. And I can honestly tell you that I don't know one of my fellow rednecks that is ashamed of our efforts and that includes the thousands of volunteers from all over the world that have been sunburned and now have rednecks, rednecks they have earned in the South.

I wish others could feel the sense of pride and community where they live that I feel here in the South. I think it would make a better world for all of us to live in.

I think many are missing the point. It's one thing and one thing only - the word "Redneck."

Like I mentioned earlier I have an uncle. He likes skynard, is blue collar all the way, like Jack daniels and all of what is generally attributed to "recneck." But call him one and he'll deck you right and square. You could call him a cowboy, a good ol boy and even a hick to some extent. But say redneck and he'll spit back "I ain't never burned no crosses and I ain't no traitor." See, when he hears redneck he thinks the Conferacy. Right or wrong, that's what he sees.

I understand the difference, and i understand Redneck is a badge of pride in the South. But in much of the country it is not.

We just disagree with the point. The word "redneck" obviously means very different things to different people here. No reason we can't disagree agreeably, though, right?

We in "Blue State Liberal Elitistland" think something very different when we hear redneck. We are probably wrong, and it could be because of bad 80's shows, or what not, but the truth is that it a very common perception. Over time, most of us have learned that not all Southerners fit this stereotype. In fact, very few do.

But California for example, has always been a place of migration. Very few from California are native (I'm one of the few - - BEAR FLAG PRIDE BAYYYYBEEEE!!!) and a lot our migrants have been from rural America, looking for a better life. Starting with the Dust Bowl migrants (who were literally stopped at the California border and sent back unless they had $1000) and continued on with the fallout from the Timber Industry collapse in the 80's.

So the California "Redneck" is made up of mostly non-Southerners. The term is applied derisively by many, and in many cases pointed towards the rural poor migrants who have come here. But the those who wear Redneck as a badge of pride here, are not Southerners either. Most of them are from Bakersfield, the Northwest, etc... and often times yyou will find a Confederate flag on the back of their truck.

Now in the South, it seems to be a badge of pride. There were even socialist labor organizations alligned with this, as well as Environmentalist ones (I had no idea Earth First originated in the South - - but it makes sense.) Keep in mind the Republicans and the media have been playing this to divide us.

As Machiavelli said "Better to have your subjects fighting each other than you."

And As Warren Beatty said As Bullworth "When are people going to realize that white poor have more in common with black poor than they do with the white rich?"

Anyway....I hope I made some kind of point here.

Say someone is a Southerner and they'll think corn bread, BBQ's and a "cute as a button" accent. It has nothing to do with the region. Californians don't think Southerners are racists and backwards (well not most Californians at least...) but the tern redneck. And that term does not equal Southerner by any stretch of the imagination. The two are completely different.

But out here the majority of self-described rednecks come from Bakersfield, Idaho or Oregon. Not the South. Most Southeners who are proud of their roots go by Southerner.

You are debating about what most Southerners do and think....with a bunch of Southerners.

Seriously, I have always wanted to go to the South. I know there are many in need and help - and beleive me I am not discounting that. Nor am I discounting Southerners. There is a lot about the South they don't teach in schools such as:

- Union soldiers were cheered when marching into Confederate states. I'm sure many were just trying to get in good with the occupying army, but the Confederacy was a downright fascist, sin-or-swim operation which still had indentured servitude.

- Most "carpetbaggers" were teachers and alturists trying to help a devastated part of the country. These "carpetbaggers" were actually welcomed into Southern towns and given lodging and made part of the communities in which they helped. Most animosity about the carpetbaggers was the fiction of Margaret Mitchell.

- The KKK was and is much more active in Rust belt states than in the South.

- The most violent race riots perpetuated by whites happened in California and Boston.

I could go on, but I'm tired.

Come to the MS Gulf Coast or NOLA and help your fellow citizens.

You get a red neck and see the red tape and the frustrations first hand.

The word "Californian" means something different than it does there. A lot of people tend to think "materialistic, sycophantic misanthropes" rather than leaders in culture, intellect, and science.

Is this valid? No, but there it is, and it is perpetuated by the continual stream of nose-brim gazing that results in a lecture on what it means to be "Southern" or "rural" or "redneck" offered by those who are none of these things. What gives anyone the right to define anyone else? Why are these groupings, always of others, necessary, and are they of any positive purpose at all?

I can't add much to the superior response already offered by Merh, but I will add this as a suggestion. We'd all be a lot better off if we spent less time worrying about what other people are and what terms describe them and more on self-examination of who we are and how we contribute to society. Part of being a liberal, to me, is a desire to help others to be better than they are because room for improvement always exists, and I can only do that by making myself better than I am and offering a model for them to follow, or not, as they desire. I cannot enforce adherence to a philosophical principle, cannot force anyone to think the way I think, but I can seek to understand how others think and avoid behaviors that make my ideas repellent before they are even known. Many people exist in this country who carry the badge of "Southern" or "redneck" or whatever as one of honor, and whether the reasons for that be good or mundane, that is the way it is. Telling those people what they are, are not, or should be will not endear you to them. Thus, your ideas will be cast aside as so much garbage before they are ever heard.

I can't really disagree with the rest of the world on that one...

There are quite a few people here do refer to themselves as rednecks and seem mighty proud of it. I don't get it. By definition by being here and agreeing that Bush is bad for the country and the world, they obviously aren't really rednecks. Yet, there are those who proudly call themselves rednecks when in reality, nope.

I hope that helps you understand why some of us are proud to be called rednecks.

I won't get into an argument here on the meaning of the term itself other than to add my voice to those who have suggested your definition is not my definition, and I do not accept you as arbiter of that meaning.

I am more interested in this as an intellectual exercise related to a line of inquiry an associate of mine and I have both separately and concurrently been studying for several years now. This revolves around the sociological concept of "Other-ing" and how those outside the South have, for a good two centuries now, been busy creating and maintaining two Americas, one "Real,' one "Other." The Other is typically defined as The South, but the application of terms and commentary used often, more often in recent decades, encompassed those living in various regions well outside the traditional South. We see it here very clearly. The classic term "redneck" was often used to describe Southerners but also those from many regions who shared common traits, habits, lifestyles, etc, i.e. it was not strictly a Southern term. The classic definition has by necessity modified with the passage of time and the advancement of society, but some common traits remain, the above list having absolutely nothing to do with any of them. The term is not regional; it's social. Yet the negative traits applied to it are clearly regionally targeted even if they are themselves not entirely regional in all their connotations.

My interest in this, eventually follows a circuitous route back to modern politics and the reason Democrats, counterintuitively, tend to lose in *rural* areas, whether they be Southern, Western, Midwestern, or whatever. I don't claim it to be the only reason, but this Othering and all its consequences, some real, some imagined, has a great influence in this.

Missed you this football season. Where were you? Probably in the Sports forum, where threads on football belong. Because I'm moderating the Lounge this mod term, though, and this lot can't be left alone for very long, especially on long Saturday afternoons and nights, I usually started an NCAA football thread here on Saturdays. Probably do the same during the bowl season - come join us!

Strangely enough, I spent a lot of time at work during college games. The powers-that-be were kind enough to let us hook up the surround-sound system on the big screen HD television, which we actually use for work related purposes, which drew several of us lingering after we closed the doors at noon watching a game. The group atmosphere along with the amazing sound and picture made my home viewing seem, well, bad. Four or five of us would gather 'round and finish watching one game, then retire to a sports bar nearby for refreshments and the next game ... and sometimes the next, and ...

And by the time I got home, I'd be wiped out. :-)

Actually; I really DON"t sound like I am from this area even though I am; because my mother was an English Professor; so she brought me up without the accent. My cousins are hard core about it.

I want to drop the southern accent so bad. You have no idea just how bad either. If I ever do, I won't miss it. I can't help it. In truth, it really does make a person seem smarter. I should have to explain that I'm not a total nitwit, just because I have a southern accent, but in truth, even my own view is that a neutral accent or even a northern accent sounds way more intelligent. Please tell your mother that I said bravo. Proper English is something that may end up helping us all in the end. After all, we do need to be able to understand each other, don't we?

same thing. I speak proper English with an accent. I would never want to lose my southern accent. It is part of who I am. I get more compliments than not. And as far as people assuming you are dumb b/c of your accent, it sounds like THEY have a problem. Not you.

The term 'redneck' is obviously different things to different people, but what is constant here is the inner beauty (hey, outer, too) and Gump-tion of our southern women. What some of these ladies have written above collectively constitutes a discourse that makes far more sense than DU's typical weekly quota. Southern women come in all flavors, obviously, but we here are graced by the presence of some pretty special people who just happen to be female and to hail from below the Manson-Nixon Line. And we are all the richer for it, I say...

That is the town I am from and this is the town that Gretchen supposedly put on the map as as she "claims" to be from Pocahontas. I personally don't care what "rednecked woman" means to anyone. All I know is that she has given most of the women from around Pocahontas a bad image - and I do not like it. We do not shop at Walmart, we do not leave our lights up all year long, and we do not live in trailers near hog farms. We are intelligent classy broads, old hippies, and union backing people. We do not particularly approve of 7 year old girls chanting "hell yeah" just because of Gretchen. It's a sore spot in this community - the town is divided right in half. Personally - I find it disgusting.

she was mentioned in an earlier thread. You have to understand what it is like to be from Pocahontas and be constantly stereotyped by her. Since I am from a union household she is a constant insult to everything I believe in. I do yard work for a living, I am from a farming background, and most of my friends are laborers - we all have red necks. She does not represent us. She popularized the term "hell yeah" so I felt my rant was appropriate.

I actually get a kick out of that song, because a good chunk of it DOES describe me and life in Alabama. I might feel differently if she was from my town, but I don't think so. I'd probably be proud of a southern sister making it in the music biz.

That said, if you don't identify with her playful look at country life - I can understand finding it obnoxious. If it helps, I NEVER would have guessed she was from Illinois!

why do i know this? cause every truck driver i have talked to about that subject agrees..as soon as they travel north of I-80 the people ain`t as friendly and the waitresses don`t say "hon".. i live in northern illinois

and damn straight. ;) I take serious exception to some of the redneck sterotyping in this thread though. 'Redneck" is part of the identity of the South. It's a term that liberals and conservatives in the South tend to actually agree on, and it's a shame it's been bastardized by people who don't understand it. But I have a son who refuses to answer to anything but Bubba, so what the hell do I know? ;)
