It's December 15th. Anyone thinking about New Year's Resolutions yet?
I've already got mine, but I cheated, as I started with mine some time ago...

This year, I will spend 1 night a week on call as a driver for a battered women's shelter. In other words, on say, a Saturday night, I'll be at the ready for any call that comes to me to go pick up a woman (possibly with child/ren) from a Safespot. She gets to one of many places, makes a call to the shelter, they call me, I go pick her/them up and deliver her/them to a place where they'll be free from abuse.

I'm looking forward to it. I hope it's largely uneventful for me, but then I also keep a thought in the back of my mind as to God helping the worthless shitbag that follows her there and gets in my way.

Anyone else thinking ahead to the New Year?

1. Yes, I've resolved not to kill Thomas Kinkade nor soil my pants in church.
Hey, Thomas, you're safe for yet another year even though you deserve it, you hack!

3. Now does that include
ALL church activities, or just during the service?

Either way, I'm impressed.

14. I don't have Star Wars undies. :(
If I did you know I'd wear 'em. Maybe I should buy some, they'd have to be from the boys' section but that's already where I buy half my shirts. ;)

28. Hey, want some advice?
Never EVER sell your product / service because it's "cheaper."

Trust me one this one. Better, yes, talk about that. Cheaper...let them find that out when you quote them a price. But do NOT use it as a selling point.

You don't want to be Wal-Mart, do you?

21. Stop dwelling on my past. and worrying so much about the future.
Don't know for sure whether I will accomplish it or not but I have to at least try. I don't want to stay depressed, anxious, and yes self pitying forever. I really want to learn to live in the present as best as I can.

22. Well, God damn. You'll never pay for a drink if I'm around.
Battered-women's shelters are a favorite charity of mine, because I have a REAL problem with men hitting women. Dunno why that is; my father never hit my mother (though he wasn't shy about beating me up), but it gets me angry even typing about it.

What I do is this: A couple of times a year, I buy half a dozen old Macs (you can get perfectly good ones for about $100 each), and I load them up with public-domain games and Kid Pix (which I've bought over 100 copies of), and send them to various shelters. I figure, here are these poor kids, Mom has grabbed them and gone to a shelter, and they need something to do to keep their minds off the lousy situation they are in.

Your resolution is to help battered women? That makes you an Official Good Guy in the Official Redstone Good Guy List.

24. Redstone why is it
that you and I have so much in common?

I also have a HUGE problem with men otherwise hurting women, though my father never raised his hand to my mother. He never hit me, largely also due to my mother not tolerating it.

I think that true men, men's men so to speak, believe that a real man would never hit a woman, child, elderly person, nor animal. I think that it has to do with fairness and the "ethics of violence" if you will. You want to duke it out with another fella, maybe a physical equal, have at it, knuckle-dragger. However, go after one that hasn't your physical prowess, and beware, as there are those that do, that will set you straight.

What you do for those kids is a wonderful act, sir, and I have nothing but respect for you, and I cherish my spot on the Official Redstone Good Guy List.

23. I've resolved to do...
...on family activity every weekend, be it going swimming, taking a hike, going to a museum/zoo whatever.

I like your idea flvegan. I was thinking of doing something like that once Daisy comes in May. Maybe even setting my house up as a safehouse. I'd have to look into it a bit more. I have a friend in New Jersey who does this. She's affiliated with the local shelter, and her house is wired into the local police station, just in case.

At last count, she's had about 20 women through her house. Some stay a few days, others a few weeks.

26. It's one thing to offer help, it's another
to open your home up.

Direct Action such as this is a blessing to those in need. If I weren't knee deep in rescue animals, I think I'd do the same.
