Hey MissHoneychurch
What do you know about Paderborn? I ask because I need to go there for a few days in April.

2. That would be really great
but I think I am going to be really busy and will have no free time. This won't be a trip for having fun. I hope to see you before then, anyway. :)

3. I just checked how far Paderborn is from Frankfurt
less than 3 hours. So it is possible. We will see. When you want I can give you my phone number so you can call. I have no problems to drive on short notice.

And it would be great to see you earlier than that also :)

4. Pardon me for hijacking, but
I discovered today that the distance from London to Frankfurt is roughly the same as from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

That amazed me. We just... okay, I just don't realize how relatively close together European cities and even countries are.

5. People are known to commute between Paris and London.
I've been known to jolly to France and back in the same day (commonly called a booze-cruise as it usually involves buying a large amount of alcohol at the lower French rates of duty).

8. Some people seem to think of it as like a moat
I hate that sort of thinking. I'm something of a europhile.

9. moat???
don't know that word. Sorry.

And I was just joking. I see the U.K. as a big part of Europe. In the past and in the future.

14. The irony is that until recently water-based travel was easier the land
Which would make it more of a super highway of the time.

I'm definitely a europhile (culturally speaking), but I don't tend to view myself as European.

18. I think I prefer the plane or the train over the ferry
I get sick on it. I don't like it. I can make it Calais - Dover barely. No thank you ....

21. I agree flying's much easier.
Especially as if one takes the ferry there's still a fair journey (by car) at the other end.

23. true
and then you have to drive with a car that isn't made for the streets in the other country (left-right switch).

I rather rent a car in the U.K. and drive then. It is easier.

10. It wasn't so much the U.S. I was thinking of
But in California, you can drive for 10 hours and you're still in California. Our eastern states are much smaller and, I assume, have more of a European-like sense of proximity.

11. well
you can drive from South Germany to North Germany in about 10 hours. But then either the Baltic Sea, the North Sea or Switzerland are in its way :)

Is that 10 hours at 100 kph? (I'm sorry, I don't know the extent of the Autobahn.)

16. yep
that is my normal speed on the Autobahn.

And believe me, when I am in the US, I always put in the cruise control. Or I would get speeding tickets en masse.

17. And I bet there aren't as many accidents there
Because not so many people drive like idiots.

Have you noticed a difference in how people drive between Germany/Europe and the U.S.?

19. we have quite some accidents
the main difference between Germany and U.K. is that they drive on the other side. Takes some getting used to it but then it is no problem. You just search for the hand brake on the wrong side sometimes :)

To the U.S. the speed is the biggest difference. And here in Europe different countries, different styles. The Italians are driving like nutz. It is scary esp. in the cities.
Germany has a lot of signs, it can get confusing sometimes.
In the U.S. the signs are really on the lower side. You have to search for them sometimes ....

20. I meant in the way Americans drive
Sorry; I didn't phrase that very well.

I drove a car with right-hand drive once, and not very far. But I was surprised to find the pedals in the same place. I was afraid I'd have to use my left foot on the accelerator and brake and right foot on the clutch. Shifting with my left hand was strange, though.

24. That surprises me
I assumed Europeans were more cooperative on the roads. Like you guys flash your lights when you pass — a simple act of courtesy that's pretty rare here.

7. Living in Europe is really cool
(I am counting the U.K. part of Europe for the purposes of this post).

There are, as you say, so many countries and places that are all so close together. There is so much to experience. Also, European flights are really competitive right now - you can go places for really silly prices.
