It's frozen solid and the freezer has never broken down, so it must have been frozen the whole time. Is this safe to eat?

no.

well, it might be safe, but it might damn well taste like crap.

You should have eaten it by about 10 months ago.

4. I plan to use it for hamburger helper anyway, so its no biggie.
If I were making hamburgers, I'd get some fresh stuff. So you say it's safe?

6. if it has been solid indefinitely, it should be safe.
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 03:40 PM by kick-ass-bob
For longer freezer storage, wrap in heavy duty plastic wrap, aluminum foil, freezer paper, or plastic bags made for freezing. Ground beef is safe indefinitely if kept frozen, but will lose quality over time. It is best if used within 4 months. Mark your packages with the date they were placed in the freezer so you can keep track of storage times.

2. McDonalds would use this meat
Seriously! Thats why their food is soo cheap. They buy expired meat, and cook it and cook it and cook it.....

If you burn it to a crisp its safe....

meat can last as long as 18 mos. But KaB is right; it might have severe freezer burn.

edit: make that 18 mos in the freezer.

5. Hmmm, can't say for sure, but that's one of the reasons I bought
a Foodsaver vacuum sealer :P It sucks all the air out and then seals the bag up nice and tight. Stuffs supposed to keep for a LONG time.

12. My freezer has a sticker in the door that says NO.
My freezer has a sticker inside the door with a guide to how long various types of food will last frozen. Next to ground beef it says "8 Months Recommended/10 Months Maximum". Personally, I'd toss it.

Be careful of advice you get on the Internet. I once found a six year old can of SpaghettiO's in the back of my cupboard and looked up their shelf life. I ended up finding a page that claimed they lasted for 10 years, ate the SpaghettiO's, and spent the next hour hurling them back out. For the record, SpaghettiO's are good for no more than 36 months, and only if they're kept in a cool area with a stable temperature. :puke:

16. I suspect those freezer guidelines are for quality and taste, not safety.
The frozen beef is likely perfectly safe for consumption, but will have lost quite a bit of quality.

18. Good point. People eat 10,000 year old mammoth meat.
Technically hard frozen meat won't ever "go bad", even after years in the freezer, if it's frozen solid and stays that way. People have thawed 10,000 year old frozen mammoth meat in Siberia and eaten it. As long as the temperature stays below freezing, bacteria cannot grow and the meat cannot decay. It simply loses texture and flavor as the ice gradually breaks it apart at a molecular level.

21. 10,000 years old, you say?
Hmmm. Wonder if it was freezer burned? ;)

The OP's hamburger should be fine for hotdish or Hamburger Helper, but I don't think I'd use it for burgers or meatballs. :)

(Off topic - how are you doing with your kids? I've been thinking of you and your family. I've had those rough times with my now-18-year-old.)

30. It should be OK for chili or taco meat or whatever....
...basically it's got a better chance of being freezer burned than anything, so as long as you mix it with a high amount of spices or sauces of some kind, it should work. I wouldn't recommend grilling it up on the old George Foreman though.
