The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Wed 12/21/05)
No Second Troy

WHY should I blame her that she filled my days
With misery, or that she would of late
Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways,
Or hurled the little streets upon the great.
Had they but courage equal to desire?
What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?

William Butler Yeats

5. I though of you yesterday, RL
when I stumbled upon this poem:

On the Strength of All Conviction and the Stamina of Love

Sometimes I think
we could have gone on.
All of us. Trying. Forever.

But they didn't fill
the desert with pyramids.
They just built some. Some.

They're not still out there,
building them now. Everyone,
everywhere, gets up, and goes home.

Yet we must not
diabolize time. Right?
We must not curse the passage of time.

-- Jennifer Michael Hecht

I adore Yeats, though I wonder how different his work would have been without Maud Gonne.

Very nice! I thought of putting a book of poetry on my list for Christmas, since I'm a bit weary of all the stuff I have at home, but I couldn't decide on a good one. At least you supply some gems!
