I'm getting really tired of this...
I keep getting these "Messenger Service" pop-ups in little grey and blue boxes that say things like:

Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on 12/23/2005 1:34:59 PM

STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.

Windows has found CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS.

Run Registry Repair from: http://www.fixwin32.com

FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO DATA LOSS AND CORRUPTION!

Of course, if you follow the link, it invariably leads to some site where they want you to plop down $30 to save your computer. I run AdAware, and I have the Google pop-up blocker; but nothing seems to work.

How can I keep these annoying messages away?

7. Interesting...
When I logged on to their site, I received a message that said Windows was not able to open the page, even though it appeared to be open already.

It seemed odd, so I closed the window without clicking on OK, and I received a message that said the page wasn't found. I then went back to the previous page, and there it was.

10. Yes, that ...

This messenger service is a "feature" of WinXP, and I'm assuming you're running XP Home since this is by default turned off in XP Pro.

FWIW, you will not stop this with a different browser, a pop-blocker, spyware scanner, etc. It's a flaw inherent in the Windows OS. Whenever I install XP Home on a system, turning this off is the first thing I do before connecting it to the Internet.

Anyway, I was going to write out instructions, but the link in the previous post says it perfectly.
