How much does it cost to move a house?
4000 sq. ft. brick.

If I can move this one I can have it for free. Gonna drive by it and take a look see--http://www.presnc.org/buyproperty/central/Emma_and_Julius_Grey_House_HPE/Emma_and_Julius_Grey_House_HPE.html

6. Hell yes!
I am trying to remember if it is the old lamp/antique place with all the really tall green bushes in front..is that right?
I would LOVE to have this!! Especially since the Boro took my own historic house and tore it down...pics here:

BUT I have no where to move it to....I own two other houses but getting a loan on them would be a bitch. I hate the house I'm in now but it is paid for and fairy nice.
I'm gonna go look at it anyway. Where there's a will there's a way....

8. Move it anywhere except Wendover .
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 10:09 PM by CarolinaPeridot
I really think that the city is trying to make every major road lead to the Wendover over . I work in High Point and its hell getting to work each day . How about moving near West Market or near Spring Garden in the area ?

Edited : I just pictures of your old house . OHMYGOSH your house was beautiful . I am so sorry that they tore down your house for the loop .

12. Yes;
I miss it like nobody's biz..I thought maybe I could *guilt* the preservation society a bit about it (sly grin)
I bet if they prove it really was Blandwood's gatehouse they won't want it moved too far...I am also thinking there will be some help with moving costs and of course there are the tax credits. Do you have any idea if it is liveable? I can't quite place the last time I saw it with activity in it.
Only problem with your suggestion is that land around those areas is scarce..and I am a firm believer in a decent amount of space around a house. I HATE houses right next to each other.
Here's hoping; I think if it is supposed to be it will work out...

15. I don't remember seeing in activity in the house .
I can't believe the structure is for free . I think with some work done to it , the house would look wonderful.

18. So do I..
I'm all excited; which is foolish considering I don't have anywhere to move it to.
I do have some investments though...there are possibilities.
Think that one story extension at the bottom may have to go though.
I'm dying to drive by and take a looksee; got some shopping to do tomm. so I will probably make a quick circuit.
As a very quick aside; you know what other house I'm just sick over? The Ireland House. Heard that fire was set on purpose....
I'll report back after I take a look; I just don't want to call the people from the preservation place without having anywhere to move it to; don't want them to laugh at me.
I just want a nice old house to call home...and to really feel like it; you know?

23. I remember the Ireland House
That was nice house too - I remember when it caught on fire . It always seemed kind of suspect - if it was set on purpose then that it is a shame because that was a nice house as well .

3. A lot is involved,
call a house mover. Permits, etc..

I've seen it done, traffic lights have to be taken down or lifted, power and phone lines are involved.

9. Weeellll..
I have absolutely no idea. I have 2 houses paid for that I don't like (inherited) but no "extra" land. I have a friend who works for Lowe's (hardware corp) who has 20 acers not far from here--and Lowes's helps this preservation group move these houses anyway; so I am thinking we might be able to pull a few strings. Just thinking that if it is meant to be; it will happen...

5. My neighbor just did it.
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 10:06 PM by Beausoir
Well, he sold his authentic log cabin to clear his lake lot so he could build some generic plywood and drywall piece of crap.

Anyway...to move the entire log cabin, including a massive fieldstone fireplace, it cost $5000.

It was a great project to watch. The cabin had NO foundation or basement but it still had to be dug out of the hole and jacked-up. That was that hardest part.

They had to pull down all the living trees (which was HORRIBLE to watch), get the power company out to clip the wires, have the cops out to direct traffic, get the gas people out to clip those lines.

The actual moving part is simple. They just slid the thing along on some massive girders. Attached some huge tires to the ends of the girders and literally pulled the thing out of the property like a trailer. It was cool.

But..you MUST hire a professional to move it. There is no way you could do this by yourself.

10. 4000 sq foot house made of brick?
Jeez louise, it might be cheaper and easier to dismantle it brick by brick before moving. I have only seen relatively elastic wood framed houses moved, and they always remove the masonry fireplace before doing so. Good luck!

19. You DO?
Some days I hate it. Some days I love it. The people alternatly drive me nuts and are the best ever. We can't decide if we want to move or not...SO works in Charlotte.
Guess we'll make up our minds sometime...
If I get the house set up; you are welcome for a visit!!

20. I'll take a guess.
I'm pretty good with this kind of engineering guesswork.
Distance may be an issue. The fact that it's brick might be an issue. In fact, brick might be trouble from structural and weight, both. Plus it depends on a bunch of peripheral stuff. Like foundation.

I'll guess $50k. But that's a California guess. It could be half that in a place like NC.

29. Yes, and the rule of thumb is that it's twice as expensive to move as wood
A 1000 sq foot single story wood frame house costs about $15,000 to move (includes new foundation), in brick it would cost about $30,000. Hmm, a 4000 sq foot two story brick house? Ouch! Still, the project may be worth it when you consider what the house would worth when the project is completed and the migraine headaches have passed.

30. It would seem to me that the potential for disaster would be very high!
I would suggest checking out the company that you want to do something like this very well as well as making sure that you are covered in any contract signed, in case something very major goes wrong.

I suppose there's always the option of putting it back together again, brick by brick...

25. Yes figure at least $20K to start, it ALL depends on how far you're
moving it.. with a 2 story house you have power lines to move, bridges and overpasses to avoid, trees in the way, etc. The largest cost is your municipal access issues.

Your largest obstacle is getting it to where you want it. The closer the better.

It's not hard to move them per se, it's just hard to get them where you want them.

Good luck!!!!!

26. $32,676.32
I'm guessing, but I looked into it years ago and found out that it costs as much to move one as to buy one in a lot of cases. If you get the house for free and already have property though, it might be a deal, depending...

27. wish I had the money. There is one here in Fort Worth that can
be had for free if you will pay to move it.

Same situation, historically significant huge house on a major street. This house deserves a setting in a grove of trees on a farm somewhere, or at least an acre or two.

For you North Texas DUers, it is the original Ronald MacDonald house at Cook Children's Hospital, just south of the hospital district. I already told my family if I won the lottery I would buy some land and get the thing moved. It really should be preserved.

Sorry, no photo.
