"Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night"- Dylan Thomas
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 04:49 AM by enigmatic
I was doing my show tonight and I played Dylan Thomas reading this; I had forgotten what an absolutely wonderful and anthemic poem it is....

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

3. I don't know about you, but everytime I hear that
I think of Rodney Dangerfield.

Pardon me for being uncultured!

There used to be a place in Columbus, OH on High St. that did poetry readings every Tuesday when I lived there; I'd go down and try out some stuff that I was writing every so often. Very relaxed crowds; nothing like a poetry slam is now...

There was this guy in his late 20's and who looked like Paul Giamatti that did nothing but read "Do Not Go Gentle....."; each subsequent week he became more and more animated, looking like Paul Giamatti imitating Joe Cocker reading Dylan Thomas. I thought it was about as Dada as it gets, but I was chemically altered when I was at the readings:)

10. Thank you for that.
Having just lost my job this week. And losing my old dog last week I really needed to hear those words.

Pretty timely, huh? And pretty timely for our present political situation, too.

We need to do a little more "raging."
