Still Christmas Shopping? Please be nice to the clerk.
Say a kind word to the person waiting on you today. Chances are they haven't had the time to do all the fun things that you've been able to. From one very tired retail worker....

3. I used to work retail and now I feel for everyone working there this year.
It was total hell.. holidays? Your co workers are your 'family' and everyone is practically RUDE. Never again will I work a retail job... ugh.

5. I wish EVERYONE had to work a christmas holiday in retail.
That way, they would know what we go through every day of our lives. Maybe then they would treat us like humans instead of kicking posts.

10. I want to sometimes too, Purr.
I'll tell you this...when I'M a customer in a store and I see or hear some jerk being rude to a worker, I say something to him/her. The worker may not be able to say anything, but I sure can.

11. I've never worked retail and I know better than to treat clerks poorly
There is no excuse for the customers who think retail workers are personal servants. Verbal abuse does not fly in my vicinity. I've told other customers off just because it was too unpleasant to listen to the exchange. The worker may not be able to say go screw but I certainly can. I dislike being the one who gets the tensed up, fed up retail clerk waiting on me after the self-proclaimed royalty has left the building. Even when there is a good reason for a dispute, there is no reason for behaving like an idiot.

Happy end of the Xmas rush, whenever it happens for you all.

6. I get incredibly frustrated trying to shop at this time of year
Mostly because of the irritating and irritable people all around - but I always make sure that I give the shop assistants a smile and wish them a Merry Christmas, I know that they've got it far worse than I have.

15. No kidding. I saw some horrible people out and about yesterday
One of them called the clerk lazy for not running the line fast enough (she was in front of me, and the proceeded to make us wait several minutes while searching for her card, running it through the reader twice the wrong way, demanding to know why it didn't work, getting angry at the cashier when the cashier told her that she has to have the stripe running the other way, had it declined (which made her very mad), ran another card and had to enter her PIN three times before she got it right, and then finally stood and watched while she made the cashier bag all of her $250 worth of groceries.

She had the nerve to insult the cashier again when she left, even though she had been very polite to this bitch through the whole transaction.

Usually, when a line is running slow, its because of the people in it, not the cashier...

I work part time as a cashier at a grocery store and I'm the last chance they have to "fire" before they leave the store. It's the holidays. Sometimes we run out of popular items. I worked until 1am this morning. If you're just now looking for collard greens or chili sauce for a glaze at 1am less than 24 hours before Christmas Day and we don't have it, don't yell at me. I cannot make it appear. I cannot wait until one of two trucks come in at 3 in the morning and hold a jar for you. I would love to be home with my daughter, fixing my own food and not spending 6 hours on my feet, 3 of those hours without any baggers at all.

I know you're paying a lot for food, but if there are 5 full carts behind you, don't stand there and watch me bag your order for entertainment. Can you help a little? Our baggers are all under 18 and labor laws require we send them home long before you came in.

There, I'm done. I work 12:30 until close (6pm) today. Then it's running to church to play at the 7:30 service. My daughter and I might get dinner around 9pm. I'm not complaining, just stating facts.

Happy Holidays.

every time I'm in a store.

I started out my working life in a video store, so I know how rediculous some customers get over the smallest things. And the way the counters are set up in most stores, except groceries and the big boxes, guarantees you're going to be talking to more than one customer at a time. If there are too many people there, I won't even approach the counter. So I'm patient, and I usually just wait until the flurry clears out. I also shop when I have time and am not in a hurry anyway. That usually saves me from getting short with people.

Here's to all the folks who have to work today before joining their households for all the festivities! :toast: You deserve it! :pals:

Now I have to run out and get one more piece of wrapping paper because my one present is too big for the the papers I have!

Working in retail really sucks any of the fun out of the holiday season.

We're in the home stretch now (thank the deity of your choice). I'm one tired person today. If I can just hold out five more hours....

Take care!

My store was a zoo yesterday. I'm not sure what to expect this morning, but I'm locking up at 1:00 PM and going home.

The vast majority of my customers are tremendous people. The one or two that haven't been so nice are gently encouraged to shop elsewhere. ("You know, I'm sure you'd be so much happier at ______ name of biggest competitor.")

26. Merry Christmas, Julie

I didn't have to tell anyone off this year (I did last year - this guy was so abusive to one of my employees that she cried and I told him to get the hell out and never come back... ah, memories...).

I'm glad you have been busy. It's just been nuts here. Two or three of us in any given day are doing the work that eight of us used to do when we were in the mall. And we're doing lots of business - we've had our best season since 2000. I don't chalk it up to the economy as much as to our customer service. We try to go above and beyond our competitors in that arena.

Wishing you and Eric a very happy holiday and all the best in 2006.

29. Nini defended a retail worker this morning
She was picking up a few things at the Sav-On drugstore, and this RUDE and NASTY person was browbeating a clerk trying to do a pricecheck on one of her items, accusing the clerk of not trusting her.

The rude customer turned to Nini and rolled her eyes, looking for sympathy. Nini wouldn't have it, and let this person know that the clerk did NOT deserve that kind of treatment and that she should appreciate this person working on Christmas Eve.

The idiot told Nini that Nini herself was being rude for pointing this out, and the clerk was rude too. Talk about projection!

Nini said "Merry Christmas", and walked away. The clerk then walked by her and thanked her quietly. :-)

Nini and I are retail veterans from long ago, and we do not forget our brothers and sisters working their asses off on the holidays during trying circumstances. :toast:
