I have a question about the ABC show "Lost"...???

I have heard a lot about this show, and although I have not seen a single episode yet (keep reading before you flame me) I plan to this coming week. Currently, I am reading the episode summaries on the official "Lost" web site, so when I watch it this week, I can have an idea as to what the hell is going on. I have currently read the summaries for the first 21 episodes.

Question #1- I'm not sure I completely understand- why did Locke knock out Sayid while he was trying to set up the transreciever? (Like I said, I have not seen any episodes, but according to the recaps on the website, this happened early in the show's history and Locke confessed in episode 21.) Does Locke not want to leave the island?

Question #2- What do you think is the "twist" or "conspiracy theory" behind the TV series? Did the US Government cause the crash and purposely put them on that island as an experiment to see if human beings could survive on a strange island? Are all the character's really dead or the figment of someone's imagination?

Locke feels they were all put on the island for a purpose. More selfishly, Locke regained use of his legs on the island, and I imagine he wants to know how that happened before he leaves.
