Dumb question about the term wingnut.
Do you use it to refer to all nutty people? Or just RW nutty people?

1. I only use it to refer to right wing nuts
I use "whackjob" as a catch all for nuts in general (not referring to people with genuine mental illnesses, whom I would never refer to in a derogatory manner).

2. Never used it, but if I did, it would only be directed at RW nutty people.

3. But, I mean in general is it used to describe the nutty right?
Or do many still use it to describe the crazed at large?

4. I knew what you meant, but to be honest, I never hear or see it anywhere
except on politically related sites and shows. Meaning, never "in real life." From that experience, it seems to me that it is most directed at political nut-cases (either that, or I just don't spend enough time in non-political areas to notice. :)

6. "Wingnut" was a catch-all term for loonies, where I grew up....
So I have a difficult time reserving it only for those with a RW type of insanity.

8. Just right-wingers ...
It's (obviously) a back-formation of right-wing nut. That moniker has been shortened to wingnut.

You rarely, if ever, hear the term "left-wing nut." They just call us commies or pinkos or liberals (a dirty word to them).

So, wingnut comes from right-wing nut. That's how I see it.
