7 hours later.. 154 miles on my bike
Something that I've always wanted to do.. a century and a half. I wore out several other groups of riders while at it too. :)

I did a century a couple of weeks ago in 4:15.

Next up .. 200 miles in one ride.

I am tired, but feeling good. Thanks for the encouragement from the other DU roadies. :toast:

4. I burned about 6800+ calories..
Edited on Mon Dec-26-05 10:00 PM by Mika
.. according to my heart monitor.

I ate a good breakfast. 6&1/2 Clif bars on the ride and drank 6 large bike bottles of sport drink in the saddle.

I was hungry as a son of a gun afterward.

I've lost about 30 lbs in the last year since I restarted cycling. Best thing I've done in my life.

21. I LOVE to ride
Edited on Tue Dec-27-05 11:31 PM by Ellen Forradalom
And the #1 reason is that I LOVE to eat. The first time I did a century, I thought, "It's not even 2:00 and I've already eaten six times today! What a great sport!"

5. It just takes practice.
Edited on Mon Dec-26-05 10:04 PM by Mika
Kudos to ya for doing it. :toast:

My regular training rides are 100km (63 miles). I do as many centuries as I can (usually some kind of bike club charity events).

I live in S Fla.. Weather is almost always good for riding, excepting hurricanes.

8. Good for you. The Double Century should be farily easy after that.
Still waiting for the chance to do my first Century. At 52, it may not happen.

10. You'll do it if you want to..
.. I've ridden several centuries with riders in their 60's and 70's.

It just takes several weeks of practice training rides.

Here's a pretty good article on getting prepared for it.

Do it! You'll feel great about having done one.

Let me know how you're doing. I'll give you some tips and encouragement. :hi:

13. I have to do some modifications to the bike first.
Unless I can get the handlebars high enough that I'm not leaning on them, thereby provoking the nerve problems in my shoulder and hands, I'll be time-limited.

And I may have to have that knee surgery first as well.

But I'll keep at it, and I thank you for the encouragement.

23. You need to get fitted by a pro.
Shoulder and hand pain/numbness is usually an indication of an improper fit on the bike. Most people are not 'set back' far enough (too much weight ratio toward the front end). Not being set back far enough also impedes a proper/efficient pedal stroke.

Get fitted by someone who knows how (and has a system) or you'll do damage to yourself, shoe cleats also.

11. I'm pushing for a 4 hour century this year.
Last one averaged 22.6 mph.

I have done sub 4 hour centuries in my 20's, I'm in my early 40's now and I feel that I can do it again.

With a group riding pace I can do 50 miles in 2 hours, mainly because I've put in some pretty serious milage in the last year - about 8500 miles. This year I'm planning on upping it to 12,000. I used to ride a lot when I was in my 20's and early 30's, including a tour around Cuba and over the Sierra Maestra mountains.

16. Way to go!
I used to cycle a lot in the late 80's. I rode an old Schwinn Paramount bike with Dura Ace components. My brother still rides but only sporadically. I simply do not have the time for it any more. About all I can spare is an hour or two for a run about 3 times a week.

18. Oh man. I'm in awe. I just got off my bike.
It's my new bike, an X-mas/Solstice present. I haven't had one in years. While I'm not overweight, after riding that sucker up and down a couple of gentle hills I realize how out of shape I actually am. :(. I'm glad I'm getting back into it though; it makes me feel like a kid and I'm less than two weeks away from 40! :woohoo:

25. It took me a year to get back in (semi) shape.
When I first got back on the bike, after a 10 year break, I could barely ride 15 miles @ 15mph. I just kept at it, slowly but surely I lost the pounds and built my cardio strength back up.

Keep at it. Good luck.

19. Have you heard about the bike4peace guys?
They rode from Washington state to Washington DC in @ 4 weeks. One of the guys was a homeless guy who rode a re-conditioned bike and he wasn't a youngster by any means!

You should check out their website: bike4peace.org.

Only one of the guys was "fit" and riding, the other 2 guys just picked it up and did many, many centuries over the course of the ride.

They are committed bikers and peace activists trying to inspire more bike people to get onboard using bikes to create an anti-war/peace message. Especially in our era of oil consumption, they are advocating alternative means of transportation and energy use.

Peace!
