3. Horehound lozenges to help with any sore throats resulting from the cold
Nothing to recommend for the congestion, though - unless you don't mind trying some jalapeno slices.

Good luck.

4. I always use this (Attention: NOT FOR CATS!)
http://www.massage-therapy-supply.com/painreliever_t-31508.html

Just rub it on your chest before going to bed. Wash the hands good afterwards and don't rub it into your eyes or something. And keep it away from the cats since it's harmful for their skin.

6. I start taking zinc lozenges @ the first sign of a cold.
It doesn't kill the cold, but it makes the cold a little shorter duration.

That and one night, I take NyQuil and wrap up in blankets to sweat it out. :D

7. Depends on the symptoms, but
if your head hurts, steam in the shower for a bit.

If your sinuses are blocked, steam in the shower, and add a bit of Chinese mustard or wasabi to a hot bowl of soup or broth.

If your throat is sore, gargle with lukewarm salt water.

If you're achey, nsaids and some sleep after the hot shower.

And for general purposes speedy recovery, garlic soup, plenty of liquids and a lot of rest.

8. Several expensive health food store items.
Wellness Formula by Source Naturals
Emergen-C
Kyolic liquid garlic extract
If it's really bad I eat raw garlic and take Jewish penicillin.
BTW, the correct old wives tale is: "If you feed a cold, you will starve a fever." Your immune system works better if you don't eat much.

10. Yin chiao

It CAN work miracles. It may not, but it can -- best taken enthusiastically at first sign that you're fighting something.

The market offers yin chiao of different strengths. I'm using one now (I think the box on the right) that has all ingredients an order of magnitude (or more) more present than the usual, sugar-coated, stuff. But even the more common kind can do the trick.

Yin chiao is common in ginseng shops and the like in Chinese areas, and may pop up in Chinese markets, but some local health food stores and co-ops are beginning to carry it, as well. Might be worth a look even if you live some place that has no 'Chinatown' or even an Asian shopping center. It's very cheap -- something like $3 for a bottle of the candy-coated kind or for a whole box of the heavy-duty stuff.

Other than that, the usual things (my mother always pushed Vitamin C in big doses) and the suggestions for temporary relief of congestion symptoms already given above.

tea w/ honey is supposed to have some enzyme that helps.

and no, it's not a home remedy, but nothing clears a stuffy head better than Vicks vapor rub.

Hot and sour soup works wonders too.

16. And if you don't have a neti pot
get one of those bottles of saline solution and snort it in the shower. I'm doing this every day and it works.

20. Scotch, honey and lemon.
I don't know the recipe, it died with my Mom. Growing up out in the middle of nowhere it kept us alive in the winter. These days she'd be jailed. I vaguely remember the string from a tea bag sticking out of the jar.
