but for some reason I find it absolutely impossible to walk in a little narrow heel. Must be wired up funny. :D

These days when I go to concerts I wear comfy shoes. I'm too old to stand for five hours on a concrete floor without them! Like these:

I love shoes. I certainly don't get my self-esteem from them. But I love fashion. I always have. Fashion is a form of art to some. And dressing is about expressing yourself. Some people only dress to "fit in" and I can understand your statement about self-esteem in that case. But that is not true for everyone.

31. I'd have to agree, of course!
I love shoes; well, boots specifically. I have always loved fashion, in general. As a little girl I used to spend hours drawing dresses and outfits. I learned to sew before I was a teenager and experimented with lots of different mediums. That one aspect of me is merely a part of my "fun" side; not the sum and total of me.

I refuse to have anyone dictate what I should or shouldn't enjoy. No one has any business projecting their own assumptions upon another person's individual preferences. Human beings are typically too complicated to reduce to such generalizations. Anyone who has a problem with that concept would be well served to share a table with the black-and-white thinkers on the other end of the political/ philosophical spectrum.

17. Some of them!
I can't wear very narrow shoes. I have shoes and boots of all heel heights, though, from the flattest flats to sky-high.

I do not wear very high heels when I have to do a lot of walking around (and for plain every day use, I just fall back on my American Eagle leather hiking shoes in winter and my sandals in summer), but I love pretty shoes.

36. I have nothing against them... they just all look painful to me.
I used to wear all sorts of high heels, and they were ALL painful. What bothers me the most about them is that they ARE bad for the feet and for the back, and too many women wear them all the time, without knowing the suffering they will endure later on. Fortunately, there's a hell of a lot less pressure on women to wear heels than there used to be say... 20 years ago, when I stopped wearing them except on stage or for auditions.

They are pretty I guess... but all I really see when I look at them are the pointy toes and the height, and it makes me cringe.

39. I am soooooooooooooo sick of this fashion trend. I HATE IT! Ugh!
Pointy, strappy, overpriced girly shoes with insane stilleto heels really seriously piss me off to no end. I see women clip-clopping around in these ridiculous things and I just want to scream "WHY DO YOU WILLINGLY HANDICAP YOURSELF AND PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO DO IT?!" Even if they weren't incredibly bad for your feet, your legs and your back, the VAST majority of women who wear them don't look good. Either they can't walk correctly so they look silly and uncoordinated. Or their toes hang over the front, or their heels hang over the back, or their feet look like sausages oozing through the straps, or their bunions (caused by the very type of shoes they adore so much) stick out one direction while the long pointy toe sticks out the other. WHY WHY WHY do women do this?

Can you imagine the number of people with actual physical handicaps out there who would LOVE to be able to walk normally and these women CHOOSE to hobble themselves?

Well, I suppose most of them will figure it out when they need foot surgery at 50 years old.

Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 03:30 PM by grace0418
your heart when you're hobbling around on your poor deformed feet when you're seventy. Think I'm kidding? My mom lives in a huge retirement complex and the subject came up one day with about 30 women between the ages of 65 and 90. Every single one, without exception, said they regret what they did to their feet in the name of fashion and if they had to do it over again they never would've worn high heels.

A podiatrist friend of mine says he is going to be a very rich man in about 10-15 years when all the young women who wear nothing but flip flops or pointy high heels come limping into his office.

I know from other posts of yours that you're pretty young. It's hard to imagine your body changing like that but, believe me, it does. I'm not trying to offend you or anyone else who likes the way these shoes look. Really I'm not. But it makes me sad to see intelligent women doing horrible things to their bodies all in the name of being sexy. I've seen pictures of you dear, you're very beautiful, high heels or not. Are future decades of pain worth the price, even if you walk just fine in them now and look sexy?

47. Yes I am young but I take care of my feet. There are some
advantages to heels (as far as posture, etc.). Maybe not as many as there are downfalls, but I pick good quality shoes. Now I don't wear them everyday. But people smoke, people eat wrong, people don't walk with good posture, etc. There are several things out there that people are doing to harm themselves. Wearing heels certainly isn't at the top of the list. Sports players usually have terrible problems with their bodies, but they still play. It is just whatever you want to do. I mean jogging is terrible on the knees, but people will still jog.

50. True but in nearly every example you cited there is some benefit to
the behavior (except smoking). Eating even bad food still gives you some nutrition, and sports offer a number of health benefits even if overdoing it causes injury. If you can be beautiful no matter what you wear (which from what I've seen in your pictures is very much true), why put your feet, ankles, knees, hips and back at risk?

Sorry to be a mother hen but it's something I really hate to see women endure because they think looking sexy is worth it. I've dealt with so many elderly women who have lost their independence due to the inability to walk. My sister-in-law's mom just had to move into a group home because she couldn't handle walking around. Other than that she's as sharp as a tack but within a year she'll be confined to a wheelchair. She's absolutely heartbroken about it and checks to see that I've properly tied my shoes whenever I visit her. My mom has had more foot surgeries that I can count. Her doctor said it was absolutely because she wore high heels and other non-supportive shoes.

I am glad you don't wear them all the time though. I still wish all women would throw all of these shoes in the garbage.

The toes are too pointy, the heels are too high and narrow and overall the shoes/boots are very impractical. They would become uncomfortable in under 15 minutes, and be unfit for walking any real distance. They are nothing more than ornaments for the feet, and unfortunately feet require something functional as well as attractive.
