My cat just got hit by a car
He died,we just buried him. How I hate this, I know I love animals too much. I become so attached, the good old word Time. I will miss Smoky, he was a stray that came to me couple of years ago. Loving and losing pets is tough. But I can not help to think all the tragic losses people in this world have endured, and a good part of the time it was unnecessary.

I am so grateful for DU, for the short time I have been here it has meant so much to me to see people of like mind. Intelligent, warm and compassionate.

7. It's really alright to cry.
Smokey was a member of your family.
You will always remember him.
I believe he will be waiting for the day you can play together again.
I miss my pets that I've been blessed with.
Grieve as long as you need to but also celebrate the good times.
You'll never forget the love you shared.

13. And you should know that ...
It was a wonderful thing that Smokey had those years of love and companionship with you. When you are ready, please do yourself and another deserving kitty a favor and go adopt another best buddy. My 83 year old father recently adopted a very sick pittiful kitten that was near death. He took "Millie" home and now he has the cutest little happy kitten you've ever seen as his constant companion. She gives him much joy. Do the same for yourself, you won't be sorry at all.

Smoky wasn't a little kitty, he weighed about 30lbs all black too, like a panther. I couldn't keep him in the house because the real Sasha, has kidney disease and only weighs about 6.
Smoky was a stray that was cold and hungry a couple of winter ago. I gave him a warm home in our barn. We live on a busy street, how I hate this street, how I wish I could of turned him into an inside cat. But he was a killer, I would find squirrels and what not, so my fear was he would do the same to Sasha.
I am one who loves and feeds animals, I adore them.

44. I had a 30 pound american eskimo who died a couple of years ago
and I don't care, she was my baby!

And even old and arthritic she was my "puppy" too.

Just like my 'bratty' (but really loved) teenagers are still my babies.

But I have a friend who is like you, she adopts stray 'kittys' all the time. And for both of you, you have at least made their time on earth happier.

The longer you have them, the deeper the love goes,
someone posted this on the spiritual part of DU, I thought it was nice, hope you enjoy too.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

You don't love animals too much - there's no such thing. How sad it would be to lose that ability to love and be compassionate just for the sake of avoiding the pain of loss.

The loss of any loved one, especially an untimely death, is heartbreaking and tragic and shouldn't be compared to other losses and thought of as "less." They are all hard and it's only right and proper to grieve for that loss.

Think how much you would have missed had you never had the privilege of knowing and loving your Smoky.

I also have a big, burly black (well, tuxedo) cat who came to us about a year ago, and he LOVES to be outside. I have him inside some, but he just years to be out so I let him go during the daylight hours but I do worry.

I have no doubt he knew he was (and still is) loved. Animals just know this.
