85 Y.O. Life Saved By Random Telemarketer Call
<snip>

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- This time, you can actually thank a telemarketer.

An 85-year-old Illinois man fell and spent the night outdoors before help came in the form of a random caller.

Crystal Rozell works for Consumer Direct Marketing in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. When she called the elderly man last Thursday morning, he was cold and desperate outside his rural home. His phone could not make outgoing calls.

Rozell kept the man on the phone until police could be called. The man was taken to the hospital.

Stephenson County Sheriff David Snyders in Illinois had no information about the man's condition, but he wanted to thank Rozell for her help.

A vice president of Consumer Direct Marketing said Rozell usually talks to about 700 to 1,000 people a day. The vice president said, "But she had the compassion to listen, and that is really something."

1. I'm surprised they didn't hang up on him
I mean, what cheap bastard can't or won't afford outgoing phone service?

2. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say
an 85 year old that has to choose between food, medicine and paying a big phone bill.

But I know whatcha mean.....
I didn't know that there was an option to not have outgoing service.

4. I only get local service
Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 02:25 PM by Kire
I have to use a calling card for long distance calls. 800 numbers and 911 are free. It costs about 6 or 7 dollars a month.

He, on the other hand, is 85 years old and should be able to get the Lifeline, which is pretty much the same thing I have, I think, for free. I don't understand what kind of plan he could possibly have where he gets incoming calls but he can't even call 911. WTF?

In any case, I'm still not taking my phone number off of the do not call list.

5. I'm pretty sure that the phone company isn't even ALLOWED to deny
people access to 911

3. I never knew you could have that option either
of no outgoing calls. Why have a phone if you can't make calls? How fortunate for him that the telemarketer was compassionate.
