DU Etiquette Forum. The topic: When does self-kicking become obnoxious?
Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 10:06 PM by jpgray
I'd say if you have more than four non-reply posts or if you sneakily use the replies of others like lifelines, responding to each only to jolt your thread back up each time it sinks below the first page line.

What say you, DUers? And if this gets no replies I will self-kick as obnoxiously as possible.

1. I try to reply to everyone
because they took the time to respond to me, and I don't post very often as it is. :)

2. I Will Reply To Those That Post A Reply That Seems Intended To Warrant A
response. I don't do it to self kick. I like seeing replies when I post a thread, but I also like seeing replies to posts I write within someone elses thread. So I try to extend that courtesy to those that post in my thread.

Also, I used to see things all the time that it was disrespectful to post a thread as a hit and run and not reply at all. So I try to reply for that reason as well.

As far as self kicks being evident in threads, I don't really see it as a big problem and haven't come across it often, except for those damn save tookie threads in GD that were 98% self kicks that no one was reading.

169. Sometimes I cannot explain something complicated, but important,
at least in my view, in a single post.

I try not to kick too many threads gratuitiously, but sometimes I will offer additional comments to a thread, particularly if the discussion is scientific in nature.

3. Hmmm....
or if you sneakily use the replies of others like lifelines, responding to each only to jolt your thread back up each time it sinks below the first page line.

How would you define this sneakiness and determine that the response to each reply is solely for the purpose of kicking the thread?

5. I could do it in this thread.
But mostly it's non sequitur or obscenely insubstantial replies to posts loooong after they were made. You keep thinking to yourself--"wasn't that thread buried a few times? It seems to keep popping back up!"

6. And what is wrong with keeping your thread alive?
If it is a thread of substance and/or if it requires action (e.g. call congress), then what harm is there in replying to replies and/or kicking your own thread?

7. I'm talking threads of purest vanity, like in a photo thread, for example
If it's something important or substantial, I don't really have as big an issue with it. I probably should have made that clear. Like if you self-kicked a thread about the damage and trauma you suffered during the hurricane, for example, I probably wouldn't waltz into that and say:

"Self-kick enough, you drama queen? :eyes:"

:D

15. Maybe this should be my secret attempt to make DU reply-paranoid
Since it seems to be doing that anyway. :D

No, I think even-handed replies aren't really an issue--just because someone replies to everyone who replied to their thread doesn't mean it's a den of obnoxious self-kickery. If however the replies to those posts are totally without content and you notice that the thread only receives them after a sinking off the top page, then I'd wonder. It's rare, but fairly easy to notice when it's happening.

I like just starting a thread and then abandoning it to its devices for a while. People probably think I'm a hateful, bitter cold individual who denies others the grace and light of his replies, or something.

10. Your self-kicking is DU performance art
It falls under the Dadaist classification in a subclause that doesn't exist in my post but everyone was expected to know. It also covers self-kicking as a form of satire; both are hereby ranked among the self-kicks I enjoy or otherwise don't find annoying.

Her drawing is sideways because she perceives a Valentine "heart" shape to be wider than it is tall.

The binding holds the sheets together and holds the covers over them. Nothing more, nothing less.

23. Daniel Mendelsohn is ripping somebody off here. (Woody Allen?)
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1285/is_6_29/ai_54793379

DM: It was a queasy issue for me because I react with horror to most personal writing. It's like performance art, which I consider to be the lowest form of expression.

RG: Lower than mime?

DM: Even lower than mime. I mean, just talking about your hysterectomy or vasectomy in public doesn't make for good art. So I was very conflicted about writing in this mode until I found that it was the only way I could write about the subjects I was interested in, like identity and self-knowledge. I remember thinking, If this comes off as interesting, it will be a miracle. But I just crossed my fingers and started writing, and it seems to have worked.

As for your point, I choose to ignore it.

If you abuse them, it's kinda like bidding on the stuff you're selling on eBay just to jack up the price. There's a reason why eBay clamped down on that practice.

would you believe it, the ones they make at work often have too much non-stick cooking spray on them that they have absorbed from the grill, which often takes away from the distinct flavors that one is looking to enjoy from a bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich.

69. you may, by all means, invite you to make me one of those, and
some day quite soon, as i will be arriving in your fair city roughly 31 days from this very day. The additional libations that you have suggested sound quite delightful, and i'm sure that they would meet with genuine and unabashed approval from the department of war as well. In addition, I am also versed in the making of sandwiches that include, but are not limited to, sausage, egg, and cheese, and ham, egg, and cheese. As you may very well know, variety is the spice of life.

she too might enjoy the company of you and the war department? When the blessed day for breakfast sandwiches and morning drinks arrives, I will phone before coming up the final driveway to see if anything needs to be picked up from Zupan's at the last minute.

I look forward to your arrival, and I appreciate the reminder about variety. That's good fucking information there!

72. I was hoping that, by all means, you might bring your better half
as well; the war department and I would be quite delighted to meet her. A phone call in anticipation of arrival would be a wise move, as one never knows what specific breakfast items may go from the level of idea to craving to death by angry girlfriend if said items are not procured within a reasonable timeframe. If variety is the spice of life, then I guess one might say that alcoholic beverages would be the meat and potatoes, verdad?

Meanwhile, one of these just arrived via Fedex/Kinko's:

It will join my two electric guitars and my electric bass in a sweet array in the upstairs room.

You will be more than welcome to play it, in fact you will be encouraged to play it, as you are a wonderful guitarist and certainly more talented than the guitar's new owner. I do not want that guitar to be entirely without good playing.

We can atomize bong-hits with whippets and see through time!

Maybe that will be for a special Boys' Togetherness Day. No Girls Allowed!

79. that sounds most enjoyable!
I have 2 acoustic guitars myself (in addition to my 1 electric; I've pared down from 5 guitars 2 years ago since I have to move them all), neither of them being a classical guitar, so that could prove to be a lot of fun. If there will be no ladies present, then a jam session enhanced by certain musically-inspiring substances could prove to be quite the transcendent experience!

61. I never try to guess a person's motives in responding to replies.
Sometimes when I first post, I respond to every reply because the conversation is new, I'm engaged and I haven't started playing scrabble, looking for real estate or doing something else. Then later I check back and I have more replies. I don't really want to kick the thread, but I don't want people to wonder why I replied to everyone but them.

I usually end up responding and then worrying that someone will think I did it just to kick my thread.

Sometimes I respond in PM to avoid that.

In general, it doesn't bother me if someone kicks their own post all day and night. If I'm not interested, I just don't look.;-)

So if somebody is nice enough to respond, I'll generally respond to them--until I end that computer session.

I will admit to self kicking a couople of threads where I was being dazzlingly witty, and felt the world would be sad if they didn't get the chance to share in my brilliance.

In other words--I just felt like being a pain in the ass!

73. Self kicking is sometimes a way to get a thread up there so
someone can see it. If it is all self kicking done in a 24 hour or less period, I see no problem with it. Once a thread dies, it dies. Time to put it to rest then. Up until that point, there is nothing wrong with the idea of making sure people see it.

Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 11:13 AM by khashka
I have only once ever kicked one of my own threads - and was roundly abused by TJ for it. Maybe I should do it more often :)

I think what happens is.... you check the MyPosts thing and discover someone said something interesting, thoughtful, provoking, funny and feel compelled to reply to them. So now that really dumb thing you posted is back on page one. It's kind of a no win situation - if I don't reply then someone will get their feelings hurt, if I do reply (and kick the thread) I come across as a self-aggrandizing asshole.

By the way, nice to see you again. There was a minor meltdown when everyone realized no one had seen you lately.

78. Ok, what is the appropriate etiquette?
I have seen people get berated for creating a post and then not responding. Now you are suggesting that responding is simply a way to keep the post kicked.

I usually respond out of courtesy. I have no alterer motive, indeed I don't care if my posts stay kicked or not.

97. The appropriate etiquette is this:
Be nice.

Let's face it. We all have other lives, so when someone takes a moment to reply to you, to say something.... that deserves consideration. I don't always respond because they've had their say and I have nothing to add.

But all of etiquette - on the net, in real life - boils down to this: be nice.

Khash.

133. For me, self-kicking is obnoxious when
the thread is obviously someone's attempt to beat a dead (or dying) horse.

In other words when a poster just can't let go of a disagreement on a thread, is hell bent on continuing to argue about how right their perspective is--and how much you suck for disagreeing. So they continue to kick their thread in hopes that it will piss off someone else, who will post to it and they can argue some more.

The REALLY obnoxious essence of this is that they start the thread with a post that seems like it's extending the olive branch to those that are angry about a previously created topic or hot button issue. For example (let's pretend for the sake of discussion this isn't democratic underground)everyone gets all worked up about threads that state that gwb is a really great guy. So threads all start about this, everyone's arguing back and forth--he's great, no! He sucks, how dare you? Blah, blah, blah.

Then as things kind of start to die down, someone brilliant starts a topic like I Hate George Bush (I know, it's a given--just an example to make my point--remember not DU). Ok, so anyway, this seems to be in agreement with what a few other posters have been saying--and is in accordance with your core beliefs. You think, "Right On--Finally someone GETS IT!" and you open the thread.

So you innocently open it and find maybe one sentence, at the beginning of the post about gwb being evil incarnate. As you continue to read, you find there's all this other shit about how gw is a Golden God, how he should be worshipped by all with fatted animals, sumptious fruits and making pilgrimages to the white house during full moons, just to lay on the lawn of the white house and wait for gwb to come out, lay hands on you and whisper secrets of the universe into your ear--repayment for faithfully worshipping he that is the golden god.

You can't believe this bullshit! You got suckered into opening this thread. :wtf: You notice several other members have already posted their outrage at such inane bullshit, telling the original poster it is blatant flame bait, etc. so you don't even bother adding your thoughts.

You notice the damn thread just won't disappear only to find that the idiot that started the thread has posted a couple of shameless kicks to keep it on the top of the page, so he can continue to argue that gw is a golden god and only one that has no soul wouldn't see that.

THAT kind of shit is shameless, obnoxious thread kicking--all for the sake of continuing a fruitless argument, just because the original poster can't let it go. Those really piss me off.

137. I try to reply to everyone who posts in a thread of mine.
And that politeness has the added benefit of kicking the thread. I'll usually only self-kick a few times before I accept that no one's interested and let it die. Other than that, if I start a thread over the weekend I'll sometimes kick it on Monday so the work-week only DUers can see it.

I don't really get annoyed about others self-kicking it unless it's a thread that has been up for days and days with hardly any replies (other than the self-kicks).

That's probably acceptable. But what if I were to do this more than four times each time it slipped below the first page? What then, I ask you, DU?

I thought a Maker's Mark on the rocks, in the company of witty, fun gay men (I hope), will be the ticket. So, on to the watering hole down the street. And away I go. :-)

thread really looks like to kick my own '0' post thread which actually contained a "happy new year" within for the 'adventurous' (would that it were so) so as to say, in fact shamelessly kicking it there as well in keeping with the theme

150. After half a day (or when no one actually cares anymore)
(which they probably didn't to begin with) After an hour if you call in your 3 or 4 friends to make it look like you're popular by having other people post 100000 times. Sometimes that warrants negative time before it becomes annoying.
I'm annoyed at the thought it's going to happen.
Damn you jpgray!

I kick...because the audience is not just the alpha posters...it's also the shadow audience that comes and goes...so you bump so that people who tune in later in the day have the opportunity to experience your post...so for me it's just a matter or catching the shifting audience

173. oh yes, and then there is the post on a weekend that needs a kick for the
weekdayers (and vice versa), the kick for the holiday vacationers, the kick for newbies a month later etc - I would say after 10 or 12 vain self-kicks and 3 months it gets obnoxious.

172. I think one kick soon after fisrt posting is okay.
Then one more, later in the day, if the post is not generating enough attention.

At least that's what I usually limit myself too, unless it's a throwaway post.

If it's something I'm extremely passionate about that I really think people need to know about, I'll kick it a dozen times in a day if necessary, but that's very rare.
