Ed Lorenz bowled the third 300 game of his life Wednesday night.
Then, during his second game, he clutched his chest and fell over. In spite of efforts to revive him, Lorenz died at Airway Lanes in Portage.
``If he could have written a way to go out, this would be it,'' said Johnny D Masters, who was bowling with Lorenz in the Schoolcraft Miller Lite League.
``He had his 300 in the first game, then got up to bowl in the fifth frame of the second game. He grabbed his chest and went over.''
Jim Lawless, who also was bowling in the league, said a couple of nurses were at the lanes and immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, keeping it up until paramedics arrived. They were unable to revive him, said Mike Skinner, his roommate and the son of Lorenz's longtime girlfriend.
Lorenz, 69, who began bowling in 1957, was a fixture on the Kalamazoo Gazette's monthly senior bowling honor roll.
He lived in Portage and worked for many years at Fuller Manufacturing, which was bought out by the Eaton Corp.
``He was very well liked, but wasn't outspoken. He kept to himself,'' said Mick Brown, who was talking to Lorenz when he grabbed his chest and collapsed.
