Win a "Duke in 88" Bubblegum Cigar
That's right. I have an extra Dukakis bubblegum cigar that I am willing to give away free of charge to one lucky DUer. It is more than 17 years old. (If you win, I wouldn't chew it if I were you.) It was made by the Swell Bubble Gum Company & it says "Duke in '88" on the cellophane wrapper. I will send this rare piece of political chewing memorabilia to you at my expense. Just tell me why it should be yours. The most creative & persuasive poster will win. I am the sole judge and final arbiter. Contest ends at 11:59 p.m. EST on Saturday, Dec. 31. Winner will be announced on New Year's Day. Void where prohibited.

"On the boats and on the planes,
They're comin' to America.
TODAY!"

Happy New Year to all.

2. I'm series!!!111!!!
Trot out your Dukakis jokes, cigar jokes, bubblegum jokes... anything.

I'm going to start the New Year down in the dumps if I don't get some replies here.

Maybe I can throw in a Dukakis/Bentsen button.

3. I don't think people know who "Duke" is
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 09:30 PM by sasquatch
They probably think it's the basketball team and not the Doonesbury cartoon character that's based on Hunter S. Thompson.

BTW, your handle leads me to think you're going nowhere fast.

5. My handle?
First of all, Duke refers to Michael Dukakis, not the Doonesbury character. (I think you can glean that from my OP.)I thought it was an odd way to refer to him when I bought it in '88. I don't think many people called him the Duke. Nevertheless, El Bubblo sells bubblegum cigars during every presidential election with slogans for each candidate. Right before the election I think they do a press release stating which candidate sold the most.

Do you mind telling me what you mean about my handle? Because I am from two red states? Whatever. I am a lifelong staunch Dem.

6. The campaign had a problem with the "Duke" thing in NH
I had a friend who worked for Dukakis in New Hampshire, and they had to stop using their "I'm with the DUKE" signs because David Duke (yes, the ex-Klan guy from Loiusiana) was on the ballot in the Democratic Presidential Primary.

They put the signs away because they were afraid some clueless sorts would vote for Duke instead of Dukakis.

8. Well, I liked Dukakis, but when I saw "Duke" - my first thought was of
that racist guy. What was his name? David Duke or something. (Not the Christian Coalition one (or whatever org that current Duke is in)).

9. Cripes.
I forgot about him. Nah, these were the bubblegum cigars to buy if you were a Dukakis supporter.

Me and The Duke in February 1988 right before the caucus:

I organized two precincts (my college campus) for him.

12. I was actually just thinking that the other day
I'm 36, so that's about right. I was a freshman in college, thinking about majoring in PoliSci. That campaign got me interested, but it was Wellstone's 1990 campaign that got me hooked.

And sadly, Clinton's 1992 was the beginnnig of the end. The 1994 elections sealed it. But Kucinich in 2004 resurrected it.

The moral of the story? DON'T TRUST WHITEY.

I got nothin'.
:silly:

13. Any other takers?
What, no more takers for this fine piece of Democratic presidential campaign history? In my book, you're not a real Democrat unless you own something that says "Dukakis for President" and still display it. ;-)

1988
Swell Introduces new Presidential Bubble Gum Cigars. They
are "The Duke in '88" (Dukakis) and "With with Bush"
(George Bush).

The cigar in question is just like this Gore cigar, only it says "The Duke in '88."

It can be YOURS for FREE along with a vintage Dukakis/Bentsen button. Just tell me why. For example: "It'll look great next to the framed photo of Mike driving a tank which hangs above my mantle." Or "I love technocrats."

Run with it.
