What is the greatest song ever written??
My Choice..
Artist: The Foundations
Song:Build Me Up Buttercup

Lyrics:

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down)and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

"I'll be over at ten", you told me time and again
But you're late, I wait around and then (bah-dah-dah)
I run to the door, I can't take any more
It's not you, you let me down again

(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time, and I'll make you happy
(Hey, hey, hey!) I'll be home
I'll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

You were my toy but I could be the boy you adore
If you'd just let me know (bah-dah-dah)
Although you're untrue, I'm attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so

(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time and I'll make you happy
(Hey, hey, hey!) I'll be home
I'll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

I-I-I need you-oo-oo more than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

You pretend it's the first time you've ever heard it.
She's twenty, now, and still plays. I bought her a book of Irish fiddle music a few months ago.

5. Estimated Prophet
"Estimated Prophet"
Words by John Perry Barlow; music by Bob Weir
("Estimated Prophet" composed and written by Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow. Reproduced by arrangement with Ice Nine Publishing Co., Inc. (ASCAP))
(Barlow has posted the lyrics to his songs.)

My time coming, any day, don't worry bout me, no
Been so long I felt this way, ain't in no hurry, no
Rainbows end down that highway where ocean breezes blow
My time coming, voices saying, they tell me where to go

Don't worry bout me, no no, don't worry bout me, no
And I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go.

California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine

My time coming, anyday, don't worry bout me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go

Don't worry bout me, no no, don't worry bout me, no
And I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go

California, a prophet on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine

You've all been asleep,
You would not believe me
Them voices telling me,
You will soon receive me
We're standing on the beach,
The sea will part before me
(Fire wheel burning in the air)
And you will follow me,
And we will ride to glory
(Way up the middle of the air)

And I'll call down thunder
And speak the same
And my word fills the sky with flame
And might and glory gonna be my name
And men gonna light my way

My time coming, anyday, don't worry bout me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin slow
My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no

Don't worry about me...

6. Night Of The Swallow by Kate Bush
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 08:22 PM by khashka
The only song that will be played at my funeral:

The night doesn't like it.
Looks just like your face on the moon to me.
And I won't let you do
What you want to do.

It's funny how, even now,
You're laughing.

I won't let you do it.

If you go, I'll let the law know,
And they'll head you off when you touch the ground.
Ooh, please, don't go through with this.
I don't like the sound of it.

It's funny how, even now,
You're miles away.

I won't let you do it.
I won't let you do it.
I won't let you go through with it.

"Meet them over at Dover.
I'll just pilot the motor,
Take them over the water

"With a hired plane,
And no names mentioned.
Tonight's the night of the flight.
Before you know,
I'll be over the water

"Like a swallow.
There's no risk.
I'll whisk them up in no moonlight.
And though pigs can fly,
They'll never find us
Posing as the night,
And I'm home before the morning."

In Malta, catch a swallow,
For all of the guilty--to set them free.
Wings fill the window,
And they beat and bleed.

They hold the sky on the other side
Of BORDERlines.

"Meet them over at Dover.
I'll just pilot the motor,
Take them over the water,
Like a swallow flying to Malta,

"With a hired plane,
And no names mentioned.
Tonight's the night of the flight.
Before you know,
I'll be over the water
Like a swallow.

"There's no risk.
I'll whisk them up in no moonlight.
And though pigs can fly,
They'll never find us
Posing as the night,
And I'm home before the morning.

"Give me a break!
Ooh, let me try!
Give me something to show
For my miserable life!
Give me something to take!
Would you break even my wings,
Just like a swallow?

"Let me--let me go
With a hired plane,
And no names mentioned.
Tonight's the night of the flight.
Before you know,
I'll be over the water
Like a swallow.

("Let me--let me go!")
"There's no risk.
I'll whisk them up in no moonlight.
And though pigs can fly,
They'll never find us
Posing as the night,
And I'm home before the morning.

("Let me--let me go!")
"With a hired plane,
And no names mentioned.
Tonight's the night of the flight.
Before you know,
I'll be over the water
Like a swallow.

("Let me--let me go!")
"There's no risk.
I'll whisk them up in no moonlight.
And though pigs can fly,
They'll never find us
Posing as the night,
And I'm home before the morning--"

But you're not a swallow!

This song is so fucking perfect. It makes me see myself: a man who did the all wrong things for all the right reasons. And I accept that as the most perfect epitaph.

Khash.

7. "Beware of Darkness". George Harrison.
Watch out now, take care
Beware of falling swingers
Dropping all around you
The pain that often mingles
In your fingertips
Beware of darkness

Watch out now, take care
Beware of the thoughts that linger
Winding up inside your head
The hopelessness around you
In the dead of night

Beware of sadness
It can hit you
It can hurt you
Make you sore and what is more
That is not what you are here for

Watch out now, take care
Beware of soft shoe shufflers
Dancing down the sidewalks
As each unconscious sufferer
Wanders aimlessly
Beware of maya

Watch out now, take care
Beware of greedy leaders
They take you where you should not go
While weeping atlas cedars
They just want to grow, grow and grow
Beware of darkness (beware of darkness)

I especially like the last verse.

8. Shakespere - from The Tempest - Where the Bee Sucks
But Only because the 17th Century printed "s" looked like an "f" thus it becomes Where the Bee Fucks, There Fuck I......

Where the bee fucks, there fuck I;
In a cowslip's bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
On the bat's back I do fly
After summer merrily.
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

Or Maybe Blowin in the Wind, or Revolution, or Satisfaction - I dunno......

10. Whose Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses~U2
You're dangerous,
Cause you're honest,
You're dangerous,
You don't know what you want,

Well you left my heart,
Empty as a vacant lot,
For any spirit to haunt.

Hey, hey sha la la
Hey, hey.

You're an accident waiting to happen,
You're a piece of glass,
Left there on the beach,
Well you tell me things,
I know you're not supposed to,
When you leave me,
Just out of reach,

Hey, hey sha la la,
Hey, hey sha la la
Whose gonna ride your wild horses,
Whose gonna drown in your blue sea,
Whose gonna ride your wild horses,
Whose gonna fall at the foot of me,

Well you stole it,
Cause I needed the cash,
And you killed it,
Cause I wanted revenge,
Well you lied to me,
Cause I asked you to,
Baby, can we still be friends,
Hey, hey sha la la
Hey, hey sha la la

Whose gonna ride your wild horses,
Whose gonna drown in your blue sea,
Whose gonna ride your wild horses,
Whose gonna fall at the foot of me,

Ahh, the deeper I spin,
Ahh, the hunter will sin
For your ivory skin,
Took a drive in the dirty rain,
To a place where the wind calls your name,
Under the trees and river laughing at you and me,
Hallelujah, heavens white rose
The doors you open,
I just can't close,

Don't you turn around,
Don't you turn around again,
Don't you turn around,
Your gypsy heart,

Don't turn around,
Don't turn around again,
Don't turn around,
And don't look back,

Come on my love,
Don't you look back,

Whose gonna ride your wild horses,
Whose gonna drown in your blue sea,
Whose gonna taste your sour water kisses,
Whose gonna take the place of Me.

14. Wild Horses Couldn't Drag Me Away~Rolling Stones
Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady, you know who I am,
You know I can't let you slide through my hands

Wild Horses, Couldn't drag me away,
Wild, wild horses, Couldn't drag me away...

I watched you suffer a dull, aching pain
Now you decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines,
Can make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild Horses, Couldn't drag me away,
Wild, wild horses, Couldn't drag me away...

I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie,
I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken tears must be cried,
Let's do some living after we die

Wild Horses, Couldn't drag me away,
Wild, wild horses, We'll ride them someday

Wild Horses, Couldn't drag me away,
Wild, wild horses, We'll ride them someday

15. Wild Horses by Gino Vanelli
http://www.ginov.com/About/Sounds.shtml

As the sun goes down on the arizona plain
And the wind whistles by like a runaway train
Hey hey hey it’s a beautiful thing
Well it’s me and you and a flatbed truck
My heart kicking over like a whitetail buck
Hey hey hey in the middle of spring

You can cut me deep
You can cut me down
You can cut me loose
Don’t you know it’s okay
You can kick and scream
You can slap my face
You can set my wheels on a high speed chase
Hey no matter what you do

Wild horses could not drag me away from you
Wild horses could not drag me away from you

As the sky falls down from the midnight blue
Spittin’ like bullets on a hot tin roof
Hey hey hey it’s a beautiful sound
Well it’s me and you in a flatbed truck
In a foot of mud just my luck
Hey hey hey a hundred miles out of town

You can call me a fool
You can call me blind
You can call it quits
Can’t hear a word you say
Cause if I had you once
I’m gonna have you twice
I’m gonna follow my heart instead of good advice
Hey no matter what you do

Wild horses could not drag me away from you
Wild horses could not drag me away from you

:puke:

20. Ever written?? That would have to be "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden
In my eyes, indisposed
In disguise as no one knows,
Hides the face, lies the snake
Oh, the sun in my disgrace,
Boiling heat, summer stench
'Neath the black, the sky looks dead,
Call my name through the cream
And I'll hear you scream again

Black hole sun, won't you come,
And wash away the rain?
Black hole sun, won't you come,
Won't you come, won't you come?

Stuttering, cold and damp
Steal the warm wind, tired friend,
Times have gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long for snakes,
In my shoes, A walking sleep
And my youth I pray to keep,
Heaven send hell away
No one sings like you anymore...

Black hole sun, won't you come,
And wash away the rain?
Black hole sun, won't you come,
Won't you come, won't you come?

22. War by Edwin Starr
War
Edwin Starr

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all

War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

Ohhh, war, I despise
Because it means destruction
Of innocent lives

War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives

I said, war, huh
Good God, y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain't nothing
But a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Ooooh, war
It's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die
Aaaaah, war-huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again y'all
War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War, it's got one friend
That's the undertaker
Ooooh, war, has shattered
Many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away

Ooooh, war, huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way

Ooooooh, war, huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
You tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it

War, huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it
Nothing

25. The Promised Land
Artist: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Lyrics:

On a rattlesnake speedway in the Utah desert
I pick up my money and head back into town
Driving cross the Waynesboro County line
I got the radio on and I'm just killing time
Working all day in my daddy's garage
Driving all night chasing some mirage
Pretty soon little girl I'm gonna take charge

Chorus:
The dogs on main street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land

I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak I just want to explode
Explode and tear this town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart
Find somebody itching for something to start

Chorus

There's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor
I packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm
Gonna be a twister to blow everything down
That ain't got the faith to stand its ground
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted

Chorus

But Born to Run is still the best Rock 'n Roll song ever, IMHO.

26. i don't know about best, but this is one of my FAVs
Jack's Mannequin - "Bruised"

I've got my things, I'm good to go
You met me at the terminal
Just one more plane ride and it's done
We stood like statues at the gate
Vacation's come and gone too late
There's so much sun where I'm from
I had to give it away, had to give you away
And we spent four days on an island
At your family's old hotel
Sometimes perfection can be
It can be perfect hell
Perfect

Hours pass
And she still counts the minutes
That I am not there
I swear I didn't mean for it to feel like this
Like every inch of me is bruised
Bruised
Don't fly fast
Oh, pilot can you help me
Can you make this last?
This plane is all I got
So keep it steady, now
'Cause every inch you see is
Bruised

I lace my Chucks
I walk the aisle
I take my pills
The babies cry
All I hear
Is what's playing through the in-flight radio
Now every word of every song
I've ever heard that made me
Want to stay
Is what's playing through the in-flight radio
And I
I am
Finally waking up

Hours pass
And she still counts the minutes
That I am not there
I swear I didn't mean for it to feel like this
Like every inch of me is bruised
Bruised
Don't fly fast
Oh, pilot can you help me
Can you make this last?
This plane is all I got
So keep it steady, now
'Cause every inch you see is
Bruised

So read your books
But stay out late some nights, some nights
And don't think that you
Can't stop by the bar
You haven't shown your face here
Since the bad news
I'm here 'til close, with fingers crossed
Each night 'cause your place isn't far
And hours pass, and hours pass, yeah, yeah

She still counts the minutes
That I am not there
I swear I didn't mean for it to feel like this
Like every inch of me is bruised
Bruised
Don't fly fast
Oh, pilot can you help me
Can you make this last?
This plane is all I got
So keep it steady, now
'Cause every inch you see is
Bruised, bruised, bruised

27. This is tough. For now I'll say The Grateful Dead - Throwing Stones
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
Dizzy with eternity.
Paint it with a skin of sky, brush in some clouds and sea
Call it home for you and me.
A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face.
But afraid, we may our home to waste.
There’s a fear down here we can’t forget hasn’t got a name just yet
Always awake, always around singing ashes to ashes all fall down.
Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime calls
And again the hunt begins and again the bloodwind calls
By and by again, the morning sun will rise
But the darkness never goes from some men’s eyes.
It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets
Stalking turf, dividing up meat.
Nightmare spook, piece of heat, you and me, you and me.
Click, flashblade in ghetto night. rudie’s looking for a fight.
Rat cat alley roll them bones. need that cash to feed that jones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Commissars and pin-striped bosses role the dice
Any way they fall guess who gets to pay the price.
Money green or proletarian gray, selling guns instead of food today.
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
If the spirit’s sleeping, then the flesh is ink.
History’s page, it is thusly carved in stone
The future’s here, we are it, we are on our own.
If the game is lost then we’re all the same
No one left to place or take the blame.
We will leave this place an empty stone
Or this shinning ball of blue we can call our home
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians are throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Shipping powders back and forth
Singing black goes south while white comes north
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing I got mine and you got yours.
And the current fashions set the pace.
Lose your step, fall out of grace.
And the radical he rant and rage, singing someone got to turn the page
And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing just leave well enough alone
But his pants are down, his cover’s blown
And the politicians are throwing stones
So the kids they dance they shake their bones
Cause it’s all too clear we’re on our own
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
It’s dizzying, the possibilities. ashes, ashes all fall down.

29. Pop Goes the Weasel - traditional.
Without a doubt the greatest song in history.

Who would have thought that under the guise of a silly children's song would lurk the incredible social commentary and poignant political allegory that holds the key to world peace? This song should be played before any government body meets anywhere in the world.

32. More, especially as sung by Bobby Darin
More than the greatest love the world has known
This is the love that I give to you alone
More than the simple words I try to say
I only live to love you more each day

More than you'll ever know
My arms long to hold you so
My life will be in your keeping
Waking, sleeping, laughing, weeping

Longer than always is a long, long time
But far beyond forever, you'll be mine
I know I never lived before
And my heart is very sure
No one else could love you more

More than the greatest love the world has known
This is the love that I give to you alone
More than the simple words I try to say
I only live to love you more each day

More than you'll ever know
My arms got to hold you so
My life will be in your keeping
Waking, sleeping, laughing, weeping

Longer than always is a long, long, long time
But far beyond forever, you'll be mine
I know I never lived before
And my heart is very sure
No one else could love you more...

36. Urge for Going
Haunting and poetic...

Awoke today and found the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky and it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
And all the trees are shivering in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go

I get the urge for going, when the meadow grass is turning brown
and summertime is falling down and winter's closing in

I had me a man in summertime, he had summer-colored skin
And not another girl in town my darling's heart could win
But when the leaves fell on the ground
And bully winds came around and pushed them face down in the snow
He got the urge for going and I had to let him go

He got the urge for going when the meadow grass was turning brown
And summertime was falling down and winter was closing in

Now the warriors of winter they give a cold triumphant shout
And all that stays is dying, all that lives is getting out
See the geese in chevron flight
Flappin' and a-racin' on before the snow
They got the urge for going and they've got the wings so they can go

They get the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And summertime is falling down and winter's closing in

I'll ply the fire with kindling now, I'll pull the blankets up to my chin
I'll lock the vagrant winter out and I'll bolt my wandering in
I'd like to call back summertime
And have her stay for just another month or so
But she's got the urge for going so I guess she'll have to go

She gets the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And all her empire's falling down and winter's closing in
And I get the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And summertime is falling down ...

It's rollin' 'round the bend,
And I ain't seen the sunshine,
Since, I don't know when,
I'm stuck in Folsom Prison,
And time keeps draggin' on,
But that train keeps a-rollin',
On down to San Antone.

When I was just a baby,
My Mama told me, "Son,
Always be a good boy,
Don't ever play with guns,"
But I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die,
When I hear that whistle blowin',
I hang my head and cry.

79. OK, here it is... (it was 1972, not 1971):
Go placidly amid the noise and waste,
and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep.
Rotate your tires.
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself
and heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys.
Know what to kiss... and when.
Consider that two wrongs never make a right... but that three do.
Wherever possible, put people on hold.
Be comforted that in the face of all erridity and disallusionment,
and despite the changing fortunes of time,
there is always a big future in computer maintainance.

Remember the Pueblo.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate.
Know yourself. If you need help, call the FBI.
Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
especially with those persons closest to you...
that lemon on your left, for instance.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love, therefore; it will stick to your face.
Gracefully surrender the things of youth,
birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan,
and let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
Hire people with hooks.
For a good time call 606-4311. Ask for Ken.
Take heart amid the deepening gloom
that your dog is finally getting enough cheese,
and reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot,
it could only be worse in Milwaukee.

You are a fluke of the Universe.
You have no right to be here,
and weather you can hear it or not,
the Universe is laughing behind your back.

Therefore, make peace with your god,
whatever you conceive him to be:
hairy thunderer or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal,
the world continues to deteriorate.

Give up

46. Every New Years at midnight, I sing "American Pie" by Don McLean....
A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, this’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die.

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you’re in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin’,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, this’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die.

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, this’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die.

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, this’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die.

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, this’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die.

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, this’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die.

They were singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, this’ll be the day that I die.

56. Pride, In the Name of Love. by U2... it changed the world.
So has all the music written by these guys.

The entire decade was radically set on its ear by the music of U2, produced by the inimitable Jimmy Iovine... we've never looked back, and we're all better for it. So, in fact, are future generations.

"Pride (In The Name Of Love)"

One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come, he to justify
One man to overthrow

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed on an empty beach.
One man betrayed with a kiss

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

(nobody like you...)

Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love...

50. This one
:sarcasm::hide:

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed,
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

CHORUS
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees

CHORUS

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You'll still be the one.

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky.
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you
And wondering why.

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
Oh, no
No, no
Oh NO!! (upon which Harris suffers an irreversible gender change)

TOMMY ROE

DIZZY - 04/06/1969
1 week at #1 - 19 weeks on chart

Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy

First time that I saw you, girl
I knew that I just had to make you mine
But it's so hard to talk to you
With fellas hangin' round you all the time
I want you for my sweet pet
But you keep playin' hard to get
I'm goin' around in circles all the time

Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy

I finally got to talk to you
And I told you just exactly how I felt
Then I held you close to me
And kissed you and my heart began to melt
Girl, you've got control of me
'Cause I'm so dizzy I can't see
I need to call a doctor for some help

Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy
My head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy
You're makin' me dizzy
You make me so dizzy
Yeah, I'm so dizzy

57. Why, that's simple...
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 02:45 AM by CanuckAmok
Anything written by "Anal C*nt" is the best song ever written.

Observe:

"Jack Kevorkian Is Cool"

first you killed an old person
then you went to jail
then you killed another
when you got out on bail

old people suck, Kevorkian rules, old people suck, Jack Kevorkian's cool

you're in jail again
because you wouldn't sell out
let's get a bulldozer
and break him out

"Pottery's Gay"

pottery's gay, pottery's gay

you could'nt afford college, you took a night class
you made a clay dildo, and shoved it up your ass

"I Lit Your Baby On Fire"

I SPENT ALL MY MONEY ON DRUGS, AND COULDN'T AFFORD TO FLY
I TOOK A GREYHOUND BUS, YOU AND YOUR BRAT SAT NEXT TO ME
IT WOULDN'T SHUT UP, SO I LIT IT ON FIRE
FOR 30 SECONDS IT WAS LOUDER, THEN IT SHUT UP

I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE
I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE
I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE
I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE

YOU CAME BACK FROM THE BATHROOM, AND SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING
YOU REALIZED IT WAS YOUR BABY, AND I STARTED TO LAUGH
YOU ASKED THE DRIVER TO PULL OVER, BUT HE LAUGHED AT YOU TOO
YOU YELLED AT ME, SO I ROASTED SOME MARSHMALLOWS ON YOUR KID

I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE
I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE
I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE
I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR, I LIT YOUR BABY ON FIRE

"I Couldn't Afford To Buy You A Present (So I Wrote You This Song)"

I couldn't afford to buy you a present so I wrote you this song
I want all the lovers of the world to help me sing along
I'm only a simple man; I never made much money
But I've got a wealth of love to share with you honey

When I think of an angel I think of your face
I want to make sweet love to you by the fireplace
I want to be your architect of your castle of love
I'll never take for granted my gift from above

We'll take a ride through the foliage
Watch the leaves turn orange and brown
Woman, I never thought I'd say this
But I want to settle down

I wish we were on a deserted island
Just me and you
I'd climb right up a tree
And get a coconut for you

"You (Fill In The Blank)"

we're so dumb, we've got nothing new to say
we write the same song 30 times a day
about how you're a cunt or you're dumb or you're gay
but we'll keep writing them anyway

you fill in the blank

fill in the blank is dumb
fill in the blank is gay
fill in the blank's a cunt
and tom pascual is short

"I Ate Your Horse"

YOUR DAD TOOK OUT A SECOND MORTGAGE TO BUY YOU A HORSE
YOU LOVED IT, AND TOOK BETTER CARE FOR IT THAN YOURSELF
YOU COMMAND IT, CLEANED IT, AND FED IT APPLES EVERY DAY
I WAS BROKE, DRUNK, AND HUNGRY, SO I KILLED YOUR HORSE, AND ATE IT

I ATE YOUR HORSE
I ATE YOUR HORSE
I ATE YOUR HORSE
I ATE YOUR HORSE

WHEN YOU CAME TO THE STABLE NEXT MORNING
YOU FOUND A PILE OF HAIR, TEETH, AND HOOVES
I HID AROUND THE BACK, TO LISTEN TO YOU CRY
THEN I BEAT AN OLD LADY TO DEATH WITH THE LEG BONE

I ATE YOUR HORSE
I ATE YOUR HORSE
I ATE YOUR HORSE
I ATE YOUR HORSE

62. The Galaxy Song ~ Monty Python's The Meaning of Life....
Galaxy Song
By Monty Python

Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown,
And things seem hard or tough,
And people are stupid, obnoxious, or daft,
And you feel that you've had quite enough . . .

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving,
And revolving at 900 miles an hour,
That's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun and you and me and all the stars that you can see,
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour,
Of the Galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars,
It's 100,000 light years side to side,
It bulges in the middle, 16,000 light years thick,
But out by us it's only 3,000 light years wide,

We're 30,000 light years from galactic central point,
We go round every 200 million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions or billions,
In this amazing and expanding Universe.

The Universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding,
In all of the directions it can whizz,
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light you know,
12 million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is,

So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
Because there's bugger all down here on Earth

70. Well, you wonder why I always dress in black
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

74. "This is not the Greatest Song in the World..."
Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,
we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.
And he said:
"Play the best song in the world,
Or I'll eat your soul."

Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,
and we each said...
"Okay."

And we played the first thing that came to our heads,
Just so happened to be,
The Best Song in the World,
It was The Best Song in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three,
It was destiny.
Once every hundred-thousand years or so,
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow...

Needless to say, the beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his whoopy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us:
"Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay!
We are but men!"
ROCK!
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World, no, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was the best muthafuckin' song the greatest song in the world.

And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
The song we sang on that fateful night,
It didn't actually sound anything like this song!

This is just a tribute! You gotta believe me!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, fuck! Good God, God lovin',
So surprised to find you can't stop it.

All right! All right!

89. By far this is the greatest
(by eric clapton)

Bell bottom blues, you made me cry.
I don’t want to lose this feeling.
And if I could choose a place to die
It would be in your arms.

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I’d gladly do it because
I don’t want to fade away.
Give me one more day, please.
I don’t want to fade away.
In your heart I want to stay.

It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
The way that you treat me baby.
Once I was strong but I lost the fight.
You won’t find a better loser.

Chorus

Chorus

Bell bottom blues, don’t say goodbye.
I’m sure we’re gonna meet again,
And if we do, don’t you be surprised
If you find me with another lover.

Chorus

I don’t want to fade away.
Give me one more day please.
I don’t want to fade away.
In your heart I long to stay.

92. clearly more than one, but here's a fav of mine...
You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma

There's a full moon over Tulsa,
I hope that it's shining on you.
The nights are getting cold,
In Cherokee County.
There's a Blue Norther passing through.
I remember green eyes and a ranchers daughter.
But remember is all that I do.
Losing you left a pretty good cowboy,
With nothing to hold on to.
Sundown came and I drove to town,
And drank a drink or two.
You're the reason God made Oklahoma,
You're the reason God made Oklahoma.
And I'm sure missing you,
I'm sure missing you.

Here the city lights out shine the moon
I was just now thinking of you.
Sometimes when the wind blows you can
See the mountains,
And all the way to Malibu.
Everyone's a star here in L.A. County,
You ought to see the things that they do
All the cowboys down on the Sunset Strip
Wish that they could be like you.
The Santa Monica Freeway,
Sometimes makes a country girl blue
You're the reason God made Oklahoma,
You're the reason God made Oklahoma.
And I'm sure missing you.

I work 10 hours on a John Deere tractor,
Just thinking of you all day.

I've got a calico cat and a 2 room flat,
On a street in West L.A.

You're the reason God made Oklahoma,
You're the reason God made Oklahoma.
And I'm sure missing you,
I'm sure missing you.

93. As for me: "Lights Out" by The Angry Samoans
There's nothing more you can leave behind
So forget about seeing and get into your mind.
Everything looks better when the world is black
So grab a fork and make your first attack!

Lights out!
Poke poke poke your eyes out.
Lights out!
Put a pen in your hand and poke your eyes out.

I can't see too well. What's it all about?
Well I don't know man did you poke your eyes out?
Sure thing I did it today just trying to get hip to the lights out way.

Lights out!
Poke poke poke your eyes out.
Lights out!
Put 'em down on the floor, roll 'em all around

If you poke to far and reach the front of your brain
it'll fuck up your mind and drive you insane
Don't worry much just let it rip today your eyeballs do the lights out trip

Lights out!
Poke poke poke your eyes out.
Lights out!
Put a pen in your hand and poke your eyes out.

Lights out!
Poke poke poke your eyes out.
Lights out!
Put an axe in your hand and poke your eyes out.
Lights out!

103. When The Tigers Broke Free
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 02:19 AM by LibertyorDeath
It was just before dawn one miserable
Morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks as the other ranks
Held back the enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George sent Mother a note
When he heard that Father was gone.
It was, I recall, in the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed with his own rubber stamp.
It was dark all around, there was frost in the ground
When the Tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead, the rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

Roger Waters

When the Tigers Broke Free
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from When The Tigers Broke Free)
Jump to: navigation, search

"When the Tigers Broke Free" is a Pink Floyd song by Roger Waters, describing the death of his father Eric Fletcher Waters, during World War II in Anzio. The song was written specifically for the 1982 movie version of Pink Floyd's album The Wall and first released as a separate track on a 7" single on July 26, 1982, before appearing in The Wall film.

The song would make its first CD appearance on the 1996 album Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays the Music of Pink Floyd. In its original form, it would be released on CD for the first time on Pink Floyd's 2001 compilation album Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd. After that, the next time the song appeared was on the 2004 re-released, remastered version of The Final Cut, where it rests between "One of the Few" and "The Hero's Return".

The song sets up the story premise for The Wall movie, with a recollectionary composite of the British Anzio campaign's Operation Shingle, where United Kingdom forces landed on the beaches near Anzio, Italy with the goal of eventually liberating Rome from under German control. These forces included the C-company of the Royal Fusiliers, in which Roger Waters' father Eric Fletcher Waters was a member of. As Waters tells it, the forward commander had asked to withdraw his forces from a German Tiger I tank assault, but the generals refused and "the Anzio bridgehead was held for the price / Of a few hundred ordinary lives," as the Tigers eventually broke through the British defense, killing the C-company, including Eric Waters.

In the second verse of the song (which makes up the reprise later in The Wall film), Waters describes how he found the death certificate from the British government among some old photographs, described as a note from King George in the form of a gold leaf scroll which "His Majesty signed / With his own rubber stamp." Waters' resentment then explodes in a final painful line ("And that's how the High Command took my Daddy from me").

The underlying theme of the song is one of the primary catalysts for the character Pink's descent into isolation and insanity throughout the story of The Wall, especially in the film version.

105. "Final Solution"- Rocket From The Tombs
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 07:22 AM by enigmatic
I got to see RFTT live in 1975 when I was 13; it changed my life. And I'll box anybody who doesn't agree that they are the greatest band of all-time, too;-)

"Final Solution" is the great american punk song; from the lyrics ("the girls don't love me cause I got a mis-direction/and livin at night ain't helpin' my complexion"), to the the killer chorus. The band shortly afterwards split off into Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys, and while both of those bands went onto moments of brilliance, to me Rocket From The tombs will always be the best...
