What makes a person go from being a liberal to being a moderate?
I have a friend who I thought was always a liberal (which she labeled herself as one on her facebook profile), and yesterday, she switched it to moderate.

:wtf:?

1. What makes a person go from moderate to liberal?
Just a change in a personal point of view.

she was a member of the College Democrats on my campus. I remember at one point last year during the elections she was pissed at the so-called moderates in this country...and now, she is one.

3. In my case realizing that political extremes usually harm the people

less likely to sustain those extremes.

Think back to the 00 election and Nader saying things probably needed to get worse to get better. Worse for whom? A look at the stats indicates the poverty level in America has increased since then, no?

On edit: I am basing it on my definition of moderate which does not equate to total sellout as in Blue Dog Dems

8. Excellent answer, darlin'!
I think before this question could truly be answered, some consensus on what "liberal" and "moderate" actually mean would have to be established. For some, "moderate" automatically means someone is a sellout. That's not my definition at all - but it is all in the eye of the beholder, yes? Some would see me as very liberal, while others would find me moderate, barely left of center on their political ideology scale.

Anyway, more importantly, it is great to see you around today!

Happy New Year!!!

11. I get mad at the "things need to get worse" people too
Ok, maybe you might not mind so much living in a van down by the river, but what about people with kids? What about the seniors? What about those with disabilities? Alot of these people are already suffering, they want them to suffer some more???

12. Exactly...who did the bankruptcy bill and the energy bill harm worst?
Yuppies who over extended or people with medical bills who used their credit cards for survival?

If you're well off and gas goes up .50 a gallon, you bitch about it at the pump and tear your political sticker off your SUV..if you're poor, you decide which necessity goes.

5. Four things.
Acquiring a bit of money makes one more wary of those who would take it away.

Seeing someone victimized in a crime makes one yearn to punish offenders.

Losing it all can make a person look for another group to blame.

Converting to a fundamentalist religion can make one eager to burn some witches.

7. They were never really liberal to begin with.
Maybe because she was not far right she thought she was a liberal. Being liberal is more than just not being a righty.

9. dahh, i thought i could escape facebook on du
it really does follow you everywhere though...

well, in my case, having also changed from "liberal" to "moderate" on facebook, it was after the realization that there are enough things about me that aren't mainstream liberal anymore.

it started off as being a pissed-off ex, because my ex's new boyfriend is more liberal than i was when we were together (to begin with, he's what i call a philosophical vegetarian, the type that gets dressed up in a cow costume and taunts people at geno's). i'm also a big fan of mark warner, which brings into play the whole fiscal side of politics. it's interesting, most people turn left when they go to college, i was so far left my whole life that i turned middle, especially after taking econ. but like i said, i feel i can't call myself liberal because i take enough center-right stances that i just don't see the label as applying anymore.

and it's not really a bad thing, i don't think, as a friend of mine says on her profile, "label jars, not people"

I'll be the first to state how much it hurts when you suddenly jump a tax bracket...and you find that with your raise you're actually making less than you did before...
