If you were going to buy ONE kick-butt reggae CD, what would it be?
I have a gift card to a music store from Xmas.

I want to buy a really good reggae CD, but it must not involve anyone named 'Marley' in any way. Any suggestions?

2. Check this out.

They have excellent world music CDs and you can sample here before you buy. They have longer samples in their bookstore kiosks, too. (Bigger bookstores like B&N, etc.)

Nothing like a good reggae CD, mon!

Good luck.

3. I don't know how much you have to spend
but there is a three disc set of Lee Perry's productions out there called Arkology for $30-ish. It covers numerous years AND the wide variety of artists he produced, so it's a really good mix, IMO. And he's an absolutely central figure in the evolution of the sound, so it's like a PBS special or sumpin' on it's development.

But make sure you get some input other than mine. There's lots of folks here that are way deeper into reggae than me.

Vibrate on!!!

:hi:

4. the soundtrack to The Harder They Come
A seminal reggae album. Various artists, so if you don't like one for some reason, you can try another.

Get this album, you will not regret it!

Also there's a six CD box set of the early Toots works that kicks ass.

6. Yesterday I picked up the new Willie Nelson Reggae CD
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 06:23 PM by fishwax
and it was really damn good. :)

But that probably wouldn't be my first recommendation. I'd recommend some Jimmy Cliff (The Harder They Come, which also includes other artists, or Wonderful World, Beautiful People both have really good pretty early stuff). I'd second the Peter Tosh/Toots suggestiong too ...

8. Linton Kwesi Johnson's Making History
I don't like much reggae, but I like him.

Sinead O'Connor's new (reggae) album has some good reviews, too.

12. I second this one.
Of course, I already have "The Harder They Come", Peter Tosh, and Agustus Pablo. But Matisyahu is next for me.

13. Thanks everyone!
The gift card will cover 2 CDs (one of which is going to be the new Coltrane/Monk disc) but I think I may stretch and get two reggae ones.

I think I'll take a stab at finding the Blue Riddim disc and the Toots & the Maytals - that sounds like a good mix of old and new.

Thanks, and happy New Year!

14. UB40's first disque - Signing Off
When they were hungry. Songs like "Little by Little" rich man's mountain comes tumbling down." Only it's hard to come by the original disque. There's a politically censored version with a blue CD cover. The one you want is beige. I had the tape for years that had worn out. Eventually, I found the original version in a shop in Inverness, Scotland.
