We just got ours in November, it's still a 40 minute drive from me, but at least it's there.

All kinds of neat stuff :P

13. Opening weekend here was freakin' insane. Traffic backed up for 2 hours
just to get into the parking lot. You'd think it was the opening of a new theme park or something.

33. I've gone 4 times since they opened in November, and with the exception
of the first trip, it's been snowing every time I drove down there. . . . weird eh?

I have these two square tables I got there that are supposed to be end tables, but I put them in front of the sofa about a foot apart and use them as a more mobile coffee table . . . they look very nice and only cost $17.00 :P

Some I've had for years -- from pots and pans to beds, couches, rugs, lamps... everything. Inexpensive, but not cheap.

And, the bulk of their stuff is made in EU countries... AND they are the best retail to work for, per the experts. Lowest turnover, too.

they manufacture everything at the lowest cost possible so we in turn get low prices... (aka China)

Not many people at the MoA store either. Apart from the checkouts and a handful of staff to assist with the warehouse area...

I'll stick to Levitz... oops, they're doing a bankruptcy closure. :(

45. eh...disagreed, there's clearly inexpensive stuff there, but the design...
approach alone to 'limited space living' is not to be found nor understood at outlets such walmart, and one is able, if it is the jones's one needs to keep up with; to deck the place out with high-end leather, verneer & drippy, high impact color & 'design house' appointments...if...that's what's really happening of course.

true though, i didn't see a bin full of cheetos anywhere B-)

66. Many of us are not outfitting dorm rooms....
We already have furniture--bought or inherited--not that Antiques Roadshow will ever see any of my "inheritance." A few pieces from Ikea would not transform my (ahem) "eclectic" decor into "Scandinavian cheerful."

Ikea is good for picking up useful odds & ends. Like decent-looking bookcases. Yes, you can spend more money & get better bookcases--but I've already spent that extra money on books.

Besides, the Houston store is a good place to enjoy our highly diverse city. Lots of different folks shop there.

For example--who knew there were so many kinds of eggplant? Even if you're not particularly an eggplant fan.

On your first visit to Ikea--just browse! Take notes for future reference. The store is designed to lead you on a winding path through the whole place. Once you known the layout, you can go directly to what you need. (Not to say you couldn't pick up an accessory or two.)

We just bought the Kullen 3 door wardrobe and two Aneboda 5 drawer chests. Nice furniture but I have just one complaint, the assembly instructions aren't clear enough and sometimes you can put the item together wrong which requires taking it apart again. My son just got his first apartment so we're getting him the 2 kitchen start boxes.

49. Their instructions tend to be gibberish, because they try to put as much
into pictures (as opposed to text) as possible...known as "internationalization" in the trade.

Try to put a set of Legos together some time, and you'll see this taken to an extreme.

You'll go screaming back to IKEA for refuge. The instructions are much more concise, and the actual assembly is much more streamlined and efficient than other ready-to-assemble items I've picked up at other stores.

the facilities in China where they have of their stuff made regularly. They want to make sure workers are treated well.
On the other hand - US companies visit manufacturing facilities to get them to go down on their prices even if it means the workers will suffer the consequences.

71. IKEA is to say the least a popular business model & design approach
to reasonable living; many will keep their remembrances of wherever it was they attained them (mom & dad, college, some collection of streets in paris (and i don't mean paris, tx) a trip to the ozarks whatever-wherever)...

but others are clearly looking for cost/value balanced alternatives, and i am one of them :-)

72. bridgie, that is SO COOL! Lucky!
Now, myself, I've never been in one before, but my bro has beautifully furnished his office exclusively from IKEA!

:D  :yourock:

Have fun!

76. he would i think get his stuff from the one in emeryville if memory...
serves; in spite of sacto being the state capitol, it has been a 'two horse farm, AG & sleepy delta cow town' up until the last some ten years...we will enjoy the addition  they would not have put it here unless the expanding demographics could support it is my thought as well

74. I like Ikea but their cheap furniture is crap
I had a dresser that fell apart every time I opened a drawer....so I recommend purchasing their mid to higher priced furniture ...

75. I went once...they immediately shuffle you onto an escalator and then
you have NO choice regarding which way to walk. It's like being on a conveyor belt. Jump off the belt to stop and look at something, and you can't get back on. Your family disappears ahead of you, around the corner.

It was the most claustrophobic shopping experience I've ever had. I did buy a cool blue chair that lights up, though.

80. "Ikea: Swedish for 'Out of Stock'."
That's my experience.

Do you have the Vulva armchair cabinet in Oxblood?

Sorry, we're all out.

Can I buy the floor model.

No.

Why not?

Because then we won't be able to sell any.

But you're out of them.

That's right.

So you can't sell any, anyway.

That's right. We're expecting more in, any day.

So why not sell me the floor model, and when the new ones arrive, you can build a new floor model.

We don't do that.

Okay, can I prepay for one and pick it up when they arrive?

Sorry, it's first come, first serve.

Can I smash your head into a fine pulp with a Squanto picnic table and matching umbrella in Trocadero Green?

I'm sorry, sir, but we're out...

82. I made the terrible mistake of taking my wife there
All I wanted was some of the birch flooring. Walked out with the damn car full and spending twice what we would have if I had gone alone.

84. IKEA - not just China
They do manufacture all over the globe, like Tikhvan and Indonesia and they are very committed to developing and using renewable and sustainable resources, like wood or recycled materials like glass and metal in their products. Their furniture is not bad looking either - we have quite a bit of their very basic pine shelving in our basement to hold our books and some of the higher end modular pieces in our family room and like it very much. My daughter's bedroom is furnished entirely in IKEA furniture. They have this bed that is about 3 and a half feet off the ground that is ideal for her at the moment. It keeps the whippets off and her stuffed animal collection intact and provides her with play space underneath.

I grow weary of fixing corners with L-brackets and drywall screws.

104. yes, plus the concept (while many consider it boring) of a life lived...
purposely, step by step, as evidenced as well in Sweden's Saab if you will, is a from of up-tick that contributes to that end
