Is it OK for me to complain about "kids these days?" (RANT)
Because that's what I'm going to do. I was on the train, after having come back from yelling at the bank (it got fixed, thank God!), and at the other end of the car, there are these three kids, who didn't look more than eight-graders, *maybe* HS freshmen...*maybe*. Anyway, they are having a rather loud conversation that I try not to listen in on, but really can't avoid. They are talking, in the *the* *most* *vulgar* terms about all the women they've supposedly had sex with! Really, kids...:puke:. I can, of course, immediately tell that two of them are lying (really, it was as bad as that "bag of sand" line in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin"), but the other goes on and on about how he "popped" her "cherry" and some other bullshit that was totally disgusting. There was a (really rather cute) young woman sitting in the next seat, between me and them with this incredibly pained look on her face. I felt so bad for her...you know that was the last thing she wanted to hear on her ride home.

Now, we all know that I am a very sex-and-durty-joke oriented person () much of the time, but I don't hold embarrassing conversations in full hearing of the general CTA traffic, except maybe when I'm drunk and it was 3:00 PM so they didn't even have that excuse. :grr:

Geez, people, if you're going to brag about your (most likely fake) sexual experiences to your friends, would you please do it in private!

Kids these days! Honestly! :grr:

21. I had a similar experience on a bus once
This guy was a few years older than these kids, and he was rather drunk. Every other word out of his mouth was "fuck". There were lots of people on the bus, and most were looking uncomfortable. This guy was sitting next to me, and when he noticed me looking, he said, "Oh, am I offending you?" I said, "Yes, as a matter of fact, you are. Your language is quite inappropriate in this kind of public setting." He apologized, and said he would not say another dirty word for the rest of the ride. And he didn't. Instead, he would say things like, "Oh, goshie!" and "Baby kittens!" He had the entire bus cracking up. And, he did keep his word. 'course, as soon as we got off the bus, he shook my hand, and said, "Have a fucking great day." I really cracked up then.

28. Yes, it was funny, it did work out well.
Since he had been drinking, it might not have, except he did have too relatively sober friends with him who I think would have intervened if he had acted out.

There is a high school about a mile from my house, and I have learned to avoid the drug and grocery stores nearby during their lunch period. These are the most foul-mouthed kids I've ever been around, the girl as well as the boys. Plus, they are total smart-asses. I was in line behind one of them, and another girl came up and cut in front of me. I said, very politely, "Excuse me, but you just cut in front of me." She said she had been standing there a minute ago, and was with the girl who was right in front of me. I said, "Oh, okay." The other girl -- the one who had already been standing in line, turned around at that point and said, "What's the matter? You in a fucking hurry or something?" I wanted to smack the shit out of her, I'll tell you, but I didn't because most likely I would have been charged with child abuse, though god knows, that girl needed her ass kicked but good. The thing that angered me the most though, is that the store manager didn't tell them all to watch their mouths or get out.

I can cuss like the proverbial sailor, but I don't do that in public, and find it offensive when others do it. If I had done something like that when I was that girl's age and my mother found out about it, she would have kicked my butt from here to Georgia -- and rightfully so.

25. Those kids knew exactly what they were doing, talking like that. Gross.
What really scares me about your story is that I've got a 12 yr old boy in the 6th grade, he just started middle school last Fall. I can't imagine him EVER speaking that way, himself, but that doesn't mean he won't ever hear OTHER kids his age doing that shit. Yuck.

Now, granted, the difference between 6th graders and 8th graders is pretty vast, but still.....8th grade and beyond ain't that far off, on my end.

:scared: Yikes....

30. I'd probably have said something to them
After riding public transporation to and from work or school for over a decade now I have the temerity to interrupt other's conversations. I do it REAL polite.

For instance. If I had been in your situation, I'd have said "excuse me" to the young lady next to me, and leaned over and with a really nice expression and a smile gotten the boys attention "Hey guys!" Real loud and real friendly. Friendly enough and smiley enough to not be threatening, but so loud that it would cause just about anyone to 'start'.

Then I would have said something like this. Loud. Friendly. Smileing

"I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. I think it's fantastic that you guys feel comfortable enough with yourselves to talk the way you do. I just wanted to let you guys know that. Anyways guys, be cool and respect the people around you. Otherwise you never know what could happen, or who you might piss off. Enjoy the rest of your ride!"

You say something like that, with a big smile, real loud, with slightly crazy eyes....it'll shut 99.99% of people the hell up.

Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 05:28 PM by Ravenseye
Boys that age are notoriously unsure of themselves. It's one of the reasons for the Bravado.

Anyway, maybe I'm a misogynist asshole chauvinist holdback, but I think if there were any men in earshot they should have said something. It's like one time I was on the T in boston and a guy in a suit wouldn't get up for this old woman (easily 80 and frail) who got on the t. He saw her. Just sat there with his headphones on, reading his free metro paper...She was standing holding onto the pole with two hands and I had to catch her when the train went. The guy still didn't get up, and I waved at him got his attention and pointed at him, the old lady, and then made a jerking thumb motion and said "get the fuck up." with a smile. He looked scared, got up, and gave the lady his seat.

Boys like that you just have to deal with from a position of strength.

"Hey shut the fuck up will ya?!"

Usually they'll shut up if you say it strong enough. Some though might sense weakness or falsness and have a comeback, so you need a comeback ready.

"You shut the fuck up." they say all puffed up.

Then if you can't control yourself to go the scary psycho I might have a gun in my bag because i'm smiling, just stand up..full up...pound your chest with your fist (go real primal) and say "You want to make me shut the fuck up asshole? How fucking dare you tell me the shut the fuck up you little prick. You shut the fuck up and then go home and tell your mommy on me. Bitch!"

That would probably work pretty well.

taken seriously by anyone my own age or older. I couldn't though. To be honest, I am jealous of them. Oh well, you have every right to rant about it. They should have apologized to the woman you mentioned for embarrassing her. They definitely should not have continued to talk that way if they offended someone, especially a lady. Ladies deserve more respect than that.
