My boyfriend has been unemployed for two months
He finally got a job at a computer store as a tech. Not great pay, but it will do. He worked there for three days when today they sprung a drug test on him. He smokes pot, doesn't do anything else,he doesn't even drink. So after three days, he is gonna lose his job.Can you believe that shit?

2. That's too bad.

I guess though that employers have the right to grant drug tests whenever they want it seems. I don't really think it's right, especially if it's only pot.

5. No doubt
If I ever have my own business, I am going to welcome pot smokers but fire all the booze drinkers.

3. Well, it sucks but it's reality
Life's never been particularly fair - when you know virtually every place drug tests, it makes sense to stop smoking when you're looking for a job. Perhaps he ought to consider trying that if he loses this one. And I don't mean to sound unsympathetic - I don't think pot should be considered a drug but it is. And until it isn't, I play the game.

4. Store doesn't want to be held liable or anything to do with it.
Any hyperbole will be sufficient reason.

I wonder what piqued their interest...

8. He seems to think that one of the manangers have a problem
with him being gay. He's a little nelly and can make some straight people freak out on him.

6. Good rule of thumb
if you're in the market for a job, stop doing everything that might even be questionable. Not just drugs (of which, IMO, pot should be legal anyway...an opinion from someone that's never touched it), but almost anything. Some places test for alcohol and caffiene abuse.

Maybe they'll miss it in the test. He should be able to appeal it, too, I think, and try again.

10. He is gonna fail
and he'll fail the re-test. He won't give up his weed for anything, much like a lot of people won't give up their booze.

16. Well, then, he has a problem
When you can't or won't give something up, even if it's in your best interests to do so, you've got a problem.

Look, I've been a smoker for over 30 years so I'm not some tight ass anti-dope moralizer. But it makes no sense to risk poverty and unemployment (how ya gonna buy your pot with no money?) because you want your weed. Or your booze. Or whatever.

He just lost my sympathy because, though I agree the whole drug test issue is bullshit, it's the reality. You play the game - you stop while you're looking and while you get the idea about where the wind blows in your new job and then you go back to doin' what you do.

Principles are fine things but they're not real good eating.

23. What about giving it up for the 30 days (?) it takes
to clear out of the system? I think that's how long it is.

I wish you both luck, either way.

24. Thanks!
We are gonna have a serious talk about this. Like I mentioned in another post, we can make it on my meager income, it just isn't all that fun. I will give him this, though, he quit smoking cigarettes last week.

27. Quitting tobacco...
...is far harder than quitting marijuana. If he can do that, he can do this for a short while and you should as well so as not to undercut his effort.

Just start yourselves a little jar and drop the amount you would normally spend on your stash into the jar with the intention of buying yourselves some REALLY good stuff after he gets a job and keeps it for a bit.

Oh, and just for fun, once he's clean: if he has two job offers at once and the one he doesn't want drug tests, then he should take their piss test and after he passes it, quit. Then tell them he doesn't feel right about working for someone who pries into their employees' personal lives like that or that enforces double standards in regard to marijuana and alcohol. Not that the opportunity will arise, but it can be fun to entertain.

Good luck.

7. As much as I'm in favor of personal choice, especially with dope,
why the HELL would anyone who's looking for work smoke it?

That's possibly the dumbest thing you could do.

Find a job, wait a few months to see if they test or not, and THEN smoke up.

9. Perhaps he should work at a hotel
Upper management asked my brother, a manager, if they should implement drug tests. He said "I would lose at least half of my crew".

12. Drug tests are bullshit
so a guy who smokes a joint here and there gets canned while a guy who gets shitfaced on booze every night is safe and sound. Although, personally, unless your flying a plane or performing surgery or some such thing I think its an unwarranted violation of privacy in either case.

14. If politicians would just get their heads out of their asses
and legalize pot shit like this couldn't happen.

And then maybe I could get some brownies to help with pain. That would be nice.

15. There's Always Holland....
As I get more interested in leaving this so-called democratic country, which is becoming less and less bearable each passing day....I look towards places like Holland, where I can live out my days in peace and tranquility.

But you would need to know Dutch, so you would blend in better. I spent 3 days there last year, and had no problem with english though. I did hear quite a few people speaking in Dutch though.

26. Drug testing a computer tech?
Utter nonsense! So the guy smokes a joint now and again, unless he does it before work what business is it of theirs?
Hell, if he is good at computer problems he ought to set up his own operation. I would hire an independent over a chain store to work on my machine. If he did house calls he could make more than any chain store "geek squad" guy.
