American Idol is a karaoke contest, with the following exceptions:

* It's on national television
* The judges are nastier
* They have a live band
* You're expected to go out there knowing the words to the song already
* Someone makes sure you look presentable before you're allowed on stage
* If you win, you get a record contract; 28 million copies of your CD get sold to the same guy who buys Sean Hannity's books, and then no one ever hears of you again
* If you come in second, you still get a record contract, but you become famous beyond your wildest dreams

Karaoke, of course, is a Japanese word that means "watch people who can't sing make fools of themselves."

by just calling it "Hell", you know.
