I got a really good visual of the Louvre - which I will be unlikely to ever visit in real life.

I'm sure the movie won't live up to the book, but I'll see it anyway.... :eyes:

3. It's a hell of a page turner.
I stayed up and read it until about 3 or 4 in the morning the first night I started it, and had it done in a couple days.

It ain't great literature, and it plays fast and loose with history, but who cares? It's a fucking entertaining, and compelling, read, and it's just darn cool, all the conspiracies tied together.

25. I agree
It was recommended to me by one of our local librarians as a fun read -- and I said half-heartedly that I would read it. I picked it up a few months later and wasn't expecting much. I'm more of a nonfiction person myself. But I too found myself literally unable to put the book down once I started it. I've even gotten the audiobook and listened to that.

No, it's not great literature but it's very enjoyable light reading.

4. I finally read it a couple of months ago.....
I can't really say why I waited so long to read it.... I'm a voracious reader. I think it had something to do with hearing so much about people trying to prove or disprove the facts. I thoroughly enjoyed it though and also got the prequel "Angels and Demons"... another hard to put down book.

Same main character as DaVinci, same type of historical fiction.... I think I liked it a smidge better that DaVinci.

6. Now THERE is a genuine page turner!
I loved it!

And even better, my hard-headed, scientific husband loved it too!

I can't wait to see the movie......

I do wonder how much of it could be true......

Good to see you tonight!

How is your hard drive?

10. It falls apart in the second half
Just my opinion, but I was pretty gripped by it in the beginning as well but towards the end it seemed like the author just wanted to wrap it up as fast as possible.

Hope you enjoy it though. I'm glad I read it if just for the theories it presents.

12. When you finish it,
read "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco, a much better book about the sacred feminine, and see how Dan Brown apparently ripped off the idea from many much better writers.

44. Oof. I read about ten pages of that
could not figure out what the author/narrator was talking about. Dan Brown at least goes into lecture mode to explain things. I feel like a bunch of background reading is necessary for Eco.

an absolute page turner. What I'm going to say is not to be misconstrued as a spoiler, but the ending is the weakest part of the book. You'll know what I'm talking about when you finish it. Enjoy!

17. I loved it----
but I also have to agree with some critics who question the authenticity of some of the historical data in the book.

I figure, history is written by the winners, so who knows what is true and what isn't?

It's a damn good book, and one of the only novels I've read in the past couple of years. I also liked Angels and Demons which has some cool scientific twists.

but GOOD brain candy. And I have a hard time bashing it because it DOES cause people to think about things, and it does contain some interesting facts and history.

I had never heard of a SmartCar before that book. Then I finally saw one and couldn't believe my eyes.

28. It's an amazing read
and although it's a work of fiction, may of the concepts they talk about including how many Christian concepts are actually reworks of Paganism aren't actually far fetched.

If anything, it takes a giant club and bashes the knees of Christian/Catholic Dogma

41. Be that as it may...
…religion itself is a giant hoax/scam as far as I'm concerned, so a conspiracy theory (well-written or not) about a religion to me is piling unbelievability on top of unbelievability. The original is silly enough without trying to make fun of it with things like this.

and she can't put it down. Great read and no wonder the Catholic church doesn't like it much. It may be fiction but it makes it seem like the church has it's own sort of CIA thug team, around the world.

But his list of "facts" are mostly incorrect.

Suspend reality for a little while and have some fun - that's what I say. Pure nonsense, but fun nonsense.

30. I wouldn't discount so readily..
Personally I don't buy the had-child-and-bloodline-in-France theme, but based on a lot of Biblical scholarship, I'd say Magdelene was a much higher authority in the church than Christians are now led to believe. Even the Catholics admit she wasn't a prostitute as they once taught. If people read this and at least recognize that Christianity was once a much more diverse set of beliefs, I'd say the book has had great impact. (since most people wouldn't pick up the non-fiction works it's based on..)

42. The Priory of Sion has been openly admitted as a fraud.
The folks who supposedly protected this "sacred blood-line" believed that flesh was evil (as opposed to spirit) - thus are hardly likely to be impressed by a religious founder who had children.

Opus Dei does not have monks - its entire purpose is to have Catholics fulfilling their faith (the O.D. version of it, that is) whilst living out of the religious state.

I'm sorry, but Brown is sooooooo wrong on his basic issues I'm not about to trust him on others.

35. It's never going to be a classic
But for entertainment, it's a fast, fun read. I enjoyed it.

As long as you're not going into it expecting some marvelous literary or historical revelations and take it for what it is...it's good. I think that a lot of the problems that people have had with it is, because of the incredible hype (and face it, he came up with a killer gimmick), they had higher literary expectations.

And I enjoyed Angels and Demons a bit more...of course, I read it not too long before John Paul II died, so that might've helped a little bit, too. Made it a bit more topical...

Timing is everything, y'know.

The idea that monotheism suppressed goddess & fertility worship. A neat idea. And what that has meant... then... it ... well... you'd think the most incredible ideas would come at the end of the book... sorta thing.....at the crisis...
