"Ace Of Spades"- Motorhead
Some days I think this song hits the trifecta in being the greatest punk, hardcore, and Metal song of all-time. Eddie Clarke is the Charlie Watts of guitar, and his uncanny ability to play in back of the beat is shown in it's finest effect here. And Lemmy's lyrics aren't Dylan, but the gambling metaphor has rarely been said better.

And if I can get technical in closing, this song fucking gooves...

If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm your man,
You win some, lose some, all the same to me,
The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say,
I don't share your greed, the only card I need is
The Ace Of Spades

Playing for the high one, dancing with the devil,
Going with the flow, it's all the same to me,
Seven or Eleven, snake eyes watching you,
Double up or quit, double stake or split,
The Ace Of Spades

You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby,
I don't wanna live for ever,
And don't forget the joker!

Pushing up the ante, I know you wanna see me,
Read 'em and weep, the dead man's hand again,
I see it in your eyes, take one look and die,
The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be,
The Ace Of Spades...

4. Oh God
I'll always remember a story he told about deciding to get his blood changed because Keith Richards suggested it. He's still a bad-ass, though..

6. That's a great show
I remember MTV playing it in the early 90's and laughing my ass off; do they have a DVD collection out of their shows?

29. They sure do. It's called something like
"Every Stoopid Episode." I bought it for my husband (and for me;) ) a couple of years ago. It's available on Amazon or BBC America. Totally worth the cash!

8. I wanted to be Lemmy
for awhile when I was just starting out and playing in crappy high school cover bands and I made the band I was in learn and play this. Since we were all just learning to play it sounded like The Shaggs covering Ace Of Spades with Peter Brady on vocals. Damn, I wish I still those tapes..

11. Definitely made for the best Young Ones episode ever.
The "Bambi" episode, which mocked University Challenge and Mozartish host Bamber Gascoigne, goes down in history as the greatest episode of any sitcom, British or American, and smack dab in the vaunted musical guest spot was dear old Motorhead performing said tune listed above.

Vyv - "To The Station!"
Mike the Cool Person - "MUSIC!"

In thunders Lemmy (well, the tape of him, anyway), Wurzel, Phil Campbell and Philthy Animal, blasting the allmighty "Ace of Spades", and away the boys go to get their asses handed to them by Steve Fry, that House, M.D. guy, one of the YO writers and Nanny McPhee/Sybil Trelawney. After blowing up Footlights, cheating on the Challenge, they proceed to get crushed to death by an eclair dropped by Hagrid playing a doctor.

Oh JUST WATCH IT, Damn it!

24. Oh yeah, and "Please Don't Touch" has to be one of my fave love songs
I mean, come on. It's a duet between Lemmy and Wendy O'Williams. How can you go wrong?

I always interpreted the "shake" mentioned in the song to be the shakes from alcoholism, not someone shaking with desire, which transforms this into one of the sickest love songs ever.

27. Aaarrrggghhhh!!!!!
Now I'm going to have Ace of Spades stuck in my head for at least a couple of days. I don't know why, but all I have to do is have someone mention it and that happens. Drives me crazy.

Funnily enough, though, it doesn't happen when I actually hear the song - just referencing it does it.

"Silver Machine" is still IMHO one of the best pop songs ever committed to vinyl.

but Motorhead was pretty kick ass, too.

34. I met Lemmy once.
Edited on Sat Mar-04-06 07:30 PM by notmyprez
Introduced myself, shook hands with him, and chatted for a few minutes backstage after a show. I had recently written an article about the band, interviewed Phil Campbell. Actually, I interviewed Phil and wrote an article about the band twice, several years apart for two different magazines.
