All these films contain very powerful social and political messages, so I think the subject is highly relevant.

The OP was NOT asking "Do you hate the Academy Awards"? The OP was asking which film will win Best Picture. And there's quite a bit of interest here...Skinner (you know, one of the administrators of Democratic Underground) has posted an Oscar Pool in the Lounge. Some people, including myself, have entered that pool. There is interest and enthusiasm for the Oscars. Maybe you should hide all threads related to the Academy Awards if the subject disgusts you.

When I see a post that doesn't interest me, I don't reply in it. But I guess that's just me.

But several of these movies (I don't know a thing about Crash) are culturally interesting, to say the least. I'm eager to see the reaction if Brokeback Mountain wins.

Secondly, it obviously doesn't take much time for someone who went to grade school before the age of cheap calculators - my math degree not withstanding. :shrug:

Half the time I haven't seen half of the films, but someone in the crowd will have, and I get a quick review ahead of spending the time or money. It's become a tradition, an opportunity for a lighthearted get-together, so I look forward to them.

Any excuse for a party is a good excuse, if you ask me.

Yeah, it's pretentious at times and a definite 3 hour self gratification fest- but I am a huge film buff and I really enjoy most of it!!!
Note: Only 1 percent of Americans see all 5 nominated movies. I am one of those geeks.

She won last in 1997 for 'Fargo' and this is her FOURTH nomination. Her role in 'North Country' was THE challenging character role in that movie - and one that almost showed her considerable talents. (Of course, I loved her in 'Fargo.') While I adore Charlize Theron, she was surely typecast for her role - it wasn't a 'stretch' for her.

Rachel Weisz's character in 'Constant Gardener' was very lovable, but the role itself just wasn't that challenging. It takes a "money scene" to win the Oscar - and she didn't have one in that movie. (Think about Helen Hunt's thank-you-note-writing soliloquy in 'As Good As It Gets' to see what I mean about a "money scene.") She merely had to play lovable - and that's probably type-casting. (At least as far as I'm concerned.) This is her FIRST nomination in a career that's been internationally uneven.

But I disagree with your overall conclusion of Weiss.

I think she CARRIED that movie on her back and held it together!

An excellent crop of Best Picture nominees this year. I suspect the momentum is behind "Brokeback" (usually the Golden Globes, which "Brokeback" won, is a good indicator).

I have this bad feeling this will be the "Color Purple" of 2006...for those who don't remember, this movie, based on a book written by Alice Walker, and Steven Spielberg directed film, starring Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery, Danny Glover, had 9 Oscar nominations but did not win in any of those categories. (I can't imagine it had to do with a predominantly Black cast....)

I want to think the Academy has learned from that outcome.

This year I saw most of the films in contention. I was disappointed in Good Night and Good Luck, amazed by Capote, less than overwhelmed by Brokeback Mountain but I did appreciate a lot of it, esp. direction and cinematography. Munich was actually pretty good but very violent (and will prob. not get any Oscars because of its dicey political message). I was also not overwhelmed by Walk the Line, tho it was an agreeable experience.

is Good Night And Good Luck. In my opinion, Brokeback Mountain is highly overrated.

My (second) cousin is Rick Carter - Production Designer for both 'War of The Worlds' and 'Munich'. (Actually it's his wife that's my cousin. It's been many years since I saw her last.) He's done some terrific work with both Spielberg and Lucas.
