What were Overlooked/Non-Nominated Stuff for Oscars

For best picture --Syrianna (this is the one that I thought should have won, but my next personal choice is Good Night, and Good Luck)

For best song(s)--"He Was a Friend of Mine" written by Bob Dylan, sung by Willie Nelson from Brokeback Mountain

"Nothing but the Wheel" sung by Peter Wolf--from Ice Harvest.

Aside: Why are there only 3 songs nominated this year? What's the rule on songs? Dylan wrote his tune a few years ago--is that why it wasn't included?

For best supporting actress--Connie Nielsen, Ice Harvest

For best supporting actor--Oliver Platt, Ice Harvest

For best actor--George Clooney, Syrianna

Aside: Maybe it is a plot for him to win best supporting actor or lead him to believe he'll win something for his acting (which I hope he does), although I am very fond of Jake Gyllenhaal's performance.

For best documentary(ies): Outfoxed
Wal-Mart, the High Cost of Low Prices


Just a few thoughts...good luck to all who participate here. May one of us win that coverted DU T-shirt, but to be truthful if I won, I'd rather have a valentine heart accompany my posts (I got 5 valentines at a time when things were so tough for me, and I really appreciated the gift of it)

for Best Picture.

I didn't...but some people did.

I'm puzzled regarding the following:

*No Best Actress nomination for Laura Linney for The Squid and the Whale
*No Best Actress nomination for Joan Allen for any of her various star turns, including Yes and The Upside of Anger
*No Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress nominations for Patricia Clarkson (Goodnight, and Good Luck, The Dying Gaul, etc.)
*No Best Director nod for Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener)
*No Best Picture nod for The Constant Gardener
*An almost total shutout of Woody Allen's Match Point (I believe the screenplay received a nomination)
*A shutout of Broken Flowers, which was actually a fine little film and featured some wonderful performances. I might say the same for Junebug, except that Amy Adams did get nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

I realize there are all sorts of factors that go into these nominations, but for the life of me I can't see why Keira Knightley was nominated for Best Actress for Pride and Prejudice when so many people did much better work.

The Best Foreign Language film section also puzzles me year after year, but I understand it's the nominating process that causes all the exclusions of obviously worthy films.

Not fair...it's because she looks like the rest of us, and Hollywood wants her to be glamourous. Sucks! I really loved her performance in "Kinsey" last year.

At the very least Joseph Gordon-Levitt should have been nominated for best actor - it's one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. (Brady Corbet is also excellent - he should get best supporting.)

I was especially impressed, considering the director also made The Doom Generation, which is one of the worst films I've ever seen.

but I didn't here very good things from critics or from people that I know who saw it.

Glad you enjoyed it though. Spacey's a verey good actor.

And I really like Kevin Spacey...

The one who keeps getting un-noticed is Kevin Kline...

I loved his performance in "De-Lovely" and it got not one nod. Soundtrack is beautiful....

He has definitely been overlooked this year as well as in other years.

I thought Sandra Bullock in Crash gave the performance of her career.

She was great...but sentimentally, I've always felt she is a solid actress so I didn't need to see mean Sandra to believe that. :(

But the both of them I think could have stood a nom. But for some reason, the Academy always chooses to piss me off in the Supporting Actress category. Year after year, the same uninspired choices. What, Judi Dench wasn't in anything this year, LOL?

Even though I've heard the actresses nominated, none of them resonate at all. Other than Catherine Keener, I can't remember any of them right now.

Michelle Williams was very good in Brokeback and she's up for supporting.

...it didn't come out too clear. I mean, didn't she do some 7 minute thing in some other movie to warrant a nom for Best Supporting, like the time she won for Shakespeare in Love.
Indeed, Michelle Williams...having not seen Brokeback I can't comment on her performance, but I'll take your word on that. Still, that Best Supporting Actress category, the bane of my existence.

A film Noir presented in Black and White with graphic backgrounds and some color added here and there for effect.....

But different tone...

I really liked Good Night, and Good Luck being all in B/W...the only thing is that when I left the theater, I felt I had smoker's cough from watching all of them smoke so much. :-) Commonplace back then. I smoked socially when I was young, then broke the habit for the most part. Every decade, I will have a cig, but that's about it--in a bar, and if someone doesn't mind offering me one.
