Kitten with a cold...question...
I posted this in the pet group too, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has any ideas...

I got my kitten (7 months old) a month ago from an animal shelter. When I got him he had a cold and was immediately placed on antibiotics. He took the antibiotics for 10 days and was significantly better. No more sneezing, no more snot...but ever since (for the past 3 weeks) his breathing sounds like he's got a stuffed up nose.

Yesterday I noticed that one of his eyes was goopy. I wiped it off...it was goopy again a few hours later. That seems to be better today, but this morning he had a snotty nose (light green snot) and sneezed a few times. That cleared up this afternoon. He's been a bit more lazy than usual (though he's still playing, eating, drinking), and the symptoms have gone away for now...except for the stuffed up nose breathing.

So the question is, should I call the vet tomorrow or just watch it for a few days? If I call the vet, should I schedule an appointment or just ask for more antibiotics? Thoughts?

1. I would probably call the vet.......
And see what s/he has to say......

Just to be on the safe side, you know! Let them decide.....

:hi:

BTW, I will be in the Criminal Courts Building tomorrow, for what I hope will be my one day jury duty service! I will ride the light rail downtown...

3. Hi Peggy!
I probably will call the vet...I just don't want to drag him to the vet if I don't need to. He's just getting comfortable here and I don't want to freak him out all over again...he's had a traumatic little life. :(

You'll only be about a mile from me! Enjoy your jury duty. I can't believe how often people seem to get called around here. Two of my coworkers have to go in next week. I didn't know anybody who ever served on a jury in Nebraska. Weird.

7. I wondered if I would be anywhere near you.....
I hope I'll enjoy my day! I normally do....

There's probably more people getting called around here since the crime rates are higher than in Nebraska!

Hope your day is good too!

8. Actually...
per capita, Omaha (Nebraska's biggest city and boy is it a shithole) has more crime than LA! My mom was shocked when I sent her that statistic. ;)

Perhaps a higher percentage of cases go to trial? I dunno...but I find it interesting.

2. I adopted a cat with a cold a few years ago.
He was so sick he was sneezing blood all over my walls. He would sneeze about 25 times in a row (I am not kidding) and he got the goopy eye thing and it was pink eye. Ever try to give a cat eye drops?? I thought giving a baby eye drops was bad. Good luck! I would call your vet. :hi:

4. Sneezing BLOOD?!
OMG! That would scare me to death! Thankfully, Spencer just seems to have a regular cold that we didn't quite get rid of the first time.

Love your avatar...I went to a Bon Jovi concert on Friday night. They still rock! ;)

6. all the sneezing ruptured blood vessels in his nose.
I'm nopt exaggerating on his sneezing, it was quite scary. I'm jealous you saw Bon Jovi the other night. I saw them in Chicago last November. It was my 6th time seeing them. They just seem to get better and better. During the part when Jon was in the audience for Blaze of Glory (at my show) the platform was about 5 feet away from me. I just about died. He sure is easy on the eyes.

10. They did
the platform thing for Blaze here too (as well as Bed of Roses)...unfortunately I was waaaaay up in the rafters. I thought they did a fabulous job of mixing old songs and new.

I've seen him one other time...at a Kerry rally in Wisconsin. I had a WAY better view then...just a few people back from the stage. He did Living on a Prayer acapella. I could have died happy. ;)

5. I work with a pet rescue group. What you're describing is not unusual
upper respiratory infections are hard to get rid of and sometimes return. Antibiotics and decongestants sometimes need to be administered for more than a month! I'd ask for a full workup from the vet, though-sometimes there are underlying conditions that should be taken into consideration before prescribing a treatment.

Good luck, and thanks for rescuing a young life! :hi:

9. Thanks for your advice...
I'm hesitant about taking him back to the vet if I don't need to since a) he's basically ok--eating, drinking, playing, etc. and b) he's just getting settled in and I think a trip back to the vet might be traumatic.

That said, I'd hate to find out later that there was an underlying problem that I didn't address...so off to the vet it is.

Spencer is my second animal shelter baby. His older "brother" Riley is 2. :)

Thanks again for the advice. :hi:

11. call the vet
get anti-biotics. Vet will probably want to see the little guy.

and you will want to keep an eye on Riley too, these things can spread pretty quickly

our little one had a cold/infection in her eye, (goopy and swollen) two days later another one of cats developed the same problem. We got them both on drops and anti-biotics - fortunately the rest of the furry ones didn't catch it
