DU Pimps check in - just how hard is it to be one?
Actually, I have to admit taht Three 6 Mafia winning that Oscar was the highlight of last night's snooze fest called "The Oscars". Even Jon Stewart, normally a very funny person, was dulled down just from hosting it. I think the producers pick these funny commedians to host their Oscar show but then put too much pressure to reign them in and thus even Jon Stewart looked practically comotose last night.

However, I really loved the movie "Hustle & Flow" and was glad to see the song win best Oscar even though I, like so many of you here at DU, had never heard of Three 6 Mafia until last night. The only other highlight of the evening had to be George Clooney's win.

1. Personally, this was a crappy year for Best Songs
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 08:13 AM by terrya
The fact that only 3 songs were nominated this year says quite a bit, I think, about how bad the quality of songs in this year's films. "It's Hard To Be a Pimp" was the worst of three pretty bad songs, IMO.

I am glad that "Brokeback Mountain" won for Best Score. I've been putting off getting the soundtrack...I'm getting it this week.

The highlight of last night? Phillip Seymour Hoffman winning Best Actor. IMO. It was a very good performance and I'm glad he won.

4. Yeah, three songs, what was that?
And remind me again why they even bother with best animated feature when every year they only have three (or is it me)?

3. Martin Scorcese 0, Three 6 Mafia 1 LOL!
I think the song sounded a mess last night, except for the woman (and I've been singing that ALL MORNING!)... I expect it sounded better/more coherent when Terrence did it.

5. That's the same woman that sang the hook in the movie
I didn't even realize it until I read about it the next day. But then again she was made to look pretty nasty in the movie and yet she looked really great last night

6. Oh neat, I thought that was her!
Haven't seen the film yet, but I've seen the trailer a bunch of times and I wondered if that was her. Too bad Terrence didn't do it, but he was too nervous and thinking about winning I'd imagine.

7. technically it wasn't his song and he's not a rapper in real life
Terrance Howard even admitted he can't rap and isn't actually much of a fan of the music (he said his tastes run more along the lines of Kelly Clarkson)

Consider this - if you're not an experienced rapper, you don't want to be on live television trying to pull off a song. Howard had the benefit of retakes when doing the song in the movies so he looked like a rapper even though he probably had to do a dozen takes just to make the song look effortless. I thought the group did a great job last night although we could have done without the pimp/ho dancers (just like we really didn't need the dancing car wreck in that other song).
