10. Basketball's best
"Shaquille O'Neal is the best of the almost four thousand NBA players who have ever suited up ..." So sayeth statistician supreme Elliott Kalb in Who's Better, Who's Best? in Basketball, a book guaranteed to generate beaucoup disagreement, as the author no doubt realized as he was writing it.

39. most dominant ever, for sure
Wilt would be good in this era too, but not as great as the overall level of athleticism and size has gone up a couple of notches since he played. Shaq is able to physically dominate even in the modern game.

20. being a Bulls fan since the 80s
Living in Chicago, I probably saw 90% of his games. His desire to win was truly rare. His greatest quality was to bring his teammates up to a level where he was. Not in skills but in desire and motivation.

I will admit that I didnt see Wilt, he was before my time.

Chamberlain dominated an entire league.

32. You missed my point.
I was putting in a word for Big Bill, DESPITE
the fact that I hate the Celtics. Or at least hated.
Not so much to hate these days. If you were a BB
fan in LA in the 60s, you'd a hated the Celtics too.
From Red on down. Bird? As a man, as a BB player, he's
right up there. As a Celtic? Hated, baby, yeah.

31. Fan polls mean little
Most fans vote for favorites. They aren't objective about who's "best."

Jordan is the most publicized basketball player in history. Had Chamberlain played in the era of 24-hour sports channels, he'd be considered a god.

Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 06:23 PM by kwassa
Not what you are thinking.

I was walking into a store, he was walking out. I found myself staring at the stomach of the biggest guy I had ever seen. As I arched my head waaaaay back to see who was this gigantic person, I said
"Oh. It is Wilt Chamberlin."

Clever one, I am.
